Re: Cylider head rebuild

Symptoms of a burnt valve will include, but are not limited to:

Extremely rough idle to near stalling when warm
Possible no-start condition when extremely cold, on cold start
Severely poor fuel...

Re: Little to no heat....HELP

Flush the system, to remove any potential clogs in your heater core. The SOHC doesn't generate as much heat(more thermal efficient camshaft profile and fuel mapping in the PCM), as the DOHCs do.

Re: P0731 and No Forward

Glad to see you did get it fixed, and yes, when the TAAT is functioning as it was originally designed, you will not feel the shifting on upshifts. The only reason you will feel the 4-3 downshift,...

Re: Oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil

This explains how your head made it to almost 200k, before it finally cracked. Saturn has a TSB, and GM extended the warranty on SOHC models, where the dealerships were required to replace cracked...

Re: NO Engine Gunk under oil fill cap this winter

If Canada doesn't require ethanol, in its premium-grade fuels, this would be why you are seeing the absence of the milky residue on the underside of your oil fill cap.

Ethanol-blended fuels will...

Re: 02 SL2 driving impressions

When a strut fails, you will hear about it everytime you hit a crack in the pavement or a bump in the road. It will be a hollow-sounding "thudding" noise. This is indicative the strut is leaking or...

Re: How 2 difficult/exp are sl2 auto trans to deal with? Is this car worth it?

I would pass on this car, since the seller is claiming the "Service Engine Soon" light is on, but hasn't stated WHAT the specific issue is with the transmission.

Given the mileage, and the...

Re: Water pump recommendations

If you use the RTV for the gasket, you should use BLUE silicone RTV for holding the gasket in place.

Re: Oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil

As a future preventative, you should run 60% coolant/40% distilled water mix. It seems to prevent the issue with the head cracking.

Re: Oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil

1991-1998 SOHC engines are prone to a hairline crack at the #5 camshaft journal, which causes the oil-in-coolant-reservoir issue you are experiencing.

You can order a reman head, BUT it is better...

Re: Planning to Pass Her On

Every Saturn S-Series owner, that has sold their S-Series, has came to regret it later on down the road.

Just keep that in mind, when discussing you and the wife's plans to ditch the car for...

Re: 02 SL2 driving impressions

These cars are responsive over bumps, due to the design of the chassis. The Saturn S-Series is designed and built, in a similar fashion, to the way NASCAR chassis designs are. The result is a very...

Re: More of my dumb research...

It depends on the transmission you are running. The autos can't handle more than about 200hp(from the reading I have done on the subject because I have an automatic), before the clutches start...

Re: Long term use of dex 6?

Southern Ohio is usually warmer, I will agree. The weather has been fairly screwy this year. On Friday, I was commuting without a jacket, during the day. The girl, at the gas station made a comment,...

Re: Front passenger door lock issue: can't open from inside

Use WD-40 or PB Blaster on the Torx screws to the outer panel, and use anti-seize when you reinstall.

As far as the clips, they are not an item you can buy at the parts store. You will want to...

Re: 99 Saturn SL2 Intermittent hesitation/shaking

I am going to agree with Signmaster, on this one, with pulling the EGR valve and cleaning it or replacing it.

The EGR should be closed at idle and WOT, only. During acceleration, cruising, and...

Re: IAT Sensor Fastened to Engine Coolant Hose

Running the engine too lean will burn the pistons and valves. The AIT sensor works with the MAP, to calculate the mass of air inside the intake manifold.

GM would later(like many automakers) male...

Re: Is the starter on 1991 SL-2 hard to get to?

Firestone can't hook up a diagnostic scanner to any U.S. vehicle, that was produced before 1996, because they are OBD-I.

A GM Tech-II, or a very expensive Snap-On scanner must be used for ALL GM...

Re: Idle questions/ gas mileage

Replace the TPS, with a unit from a JY. Aftermarket TPS sensors are terrible and have very high out-of-box failure rates.

Re: Tracking down a coolant leak

The terminology used in repairs manuals can vary, depending on which author wrote the manual.

FSM, I think, refers to the tank as the "expansion tank".

Other names can be, "Overflow...

Whereabouts, in Ohio, do you happen to be located? Where I am, it is gorgeous today, and wasn't bad yesterday either. We were in the 40s, both days, and maybe a little cloudy at worst.
