Re: Loud Clanking Noise Left Side Engine

Umm... all of the blocks are aluminum. The '96s will go easily into a '95.

Re: A Confusing MP7 Slamming Gears

I don't think the PR spool being mechanically stuck could affect the solenoid coil at all. However, SF does not put the PR Sonnax parts in; there could be a problem in there.

Do you have a gauge...

Re: SL1 TAAT transmission mystery

If you disconnect that harness at the connector on top of the trans cover/pan, the trans will operate in R and 4th only (4th while D is selected). Nothing will get harmed. In fact, disconnecting...

Re: Reverse slam?......and other issues

You will need to drive it a while for the PCM to re-learn the shift parameters. There is a procedure to do this re-learn quickly, but just driving for a while will do it. Just 5-10 miles should be...

Re: '98 SL2 To Fix Or Not To Fix

^^^^ +1

Some good wisdom/experience in the above. You may decide to do different, but at least seriously consider it.

Re: Loud Clanking Noise Left Side Engine

I wouldn't bother with anything else until the compression test results are in.

Re: '98 SL2 To Fix Or Not To Fix

Take compression readings, that may give further hints.

Do you have any emissions testing to worry about?

Re: Loud Clanking Noise Left Side Engine

Clarify: Did you disable every cylinder one-by-one, or only one of them?

Re: What Does Factory Exhaust System Look Like?

Post a picture of that screw. If it isn't OEM, maybe we can think of a plausible explanation for it. My understanding is nothing other than the cat has to be OEM/CARB-exempted.

Re: How to check oil pressure relief valve?

I gotta ask... why are you wanting to test it, what are the symptoms/problem you are investigating?

Cancel this, I just looked at your other thread.

Re: Loud Clanking Noise Left Side Engine

Disable each cylinder, one-at-a-time, by disconnecting the electrical cable to an injector; see if this can be pinned-down to a specific cylinder. Have you pulled the plugs to inspect them and take...

Re: Stumped on loss of oil pressure.

How many screws did you take out, not counting the two that come up from the oil pan? I don't know the exact count, but there is one, kind of in the middle of the passenger-side face, that is a bit...

Re: Stumped on loss of oil pressure.

"On using a crank sprocket..."

For what? The timing cover R&R requires no special tools. Access when the engine is in the car is miserable, that's the only real issue.

Re: Starter or not the Starter... that is the ??

A voltmeter can absolutely pin-point the problem area, no need to remove/clean/peel anything; but you have to use the meter correctly.

Please advise if one meter lead was on the starter case. If...

Re: Stumped on loss of oil pressure.

Okay, and be realistic when you inspect those bearings. No bearing will look perfect after it has been in use. Sorry about the "mixed message" here...

Re: Stumped on loss of oil pressure.

The engine bearings are more sensitive to loss of oil pressure than the piston/ring area; good compression doesn't ensure there is no damage. And, the compression isn't all that wonderful. Yes, it...

Re: Starter or not the Starter... that is the ??

I disagree, those voltages measured are fine, more than adequate to crank and fire the engine. However, where did you put the other meter lead, to the starter case itself or just some handy spot on...

Re: Stumped on loss of oil pressure.

No, it is not likely that the filter is the cause. I expect these Saturns have a by-pass that opens if the filter is clogged and there is too much pressure drop through it.

Alas, by the time you...

Re: need opinions on '94 A/C

Those fill quantities are shown in both milliliters (a volume measurement) and ounces (a weight measurement). That seems a bit odd to me, so I gotta ask... is that really supposed to be fluid-ounces...

Re: SL1 transmission issues

I don't.

Pull the three trans fuses. If it doesn't have R like that, then the problem is "mechanical" and you can ignore all electrical possibilities for now.

With no R at all (all the time,...

Re: Towing Possible For SL2?

The weights, both empty and max should be on a label in the driver's-door jam area. Empty weight is in the 2600-2700 lbs. range, I think.

As far as towing, there are too many variables to give a...

Re: need opinions on '94 A/C

First, my apologies for calling you "fdreyer" in the post above. That was a mistake in my memory, not a typo.

I have no idea now how much oil has been lost. I am certainly planning on measuring...

Re: need opinions on '94 A/C

"Life got in the way of this project", it will be a while before I get back to it. However, I did make some progress just before the halt. The last time I checked, things were like this:

Ambient...

Re: Replace 95 SL1 PCM with 96 PCM

Hmm... I have a foot in both camps. It could certainly be accomplished, but I gotta ask why?

Ignoring emissions issues, I'll assume no testing will be required of this new config, what benefits...

Re: need opinions on '94 A/C

I have a 30# jug of R134a. There was a time, a few years back, when it was impossible to buy small cans of it in my part of Calif, but 30# jugs were no problem!

PS: no, I didn't put in the whole...
