Re: VTi to AF23 transmission swap

Hi guys-

As the originator of this thread, I thought it would be fitting for me to also sign off as the expert on this subject. I traded in my Ion August 18, 2011 for a new 2011 Chevy Malibu LTZ....

Re: VTi to AF23 transmission swap

New transmission cable is not needed, just the mounting bracket on top of the transmission. Also, all 3 transmission mounts are NOT different. Everything that is needed for this swap is listed in...

Re: timing chain, bent valves, head gasket? Help me diagnose

Some more info...I bought the car with the seller telling me the timing chain was making the ticking noise. I checked the camshaft timing, and none of the timing chain marks would line up with the...

timing chain, bent valves, head gasket? Help me diagnose

I just bought an 03 Cavalier with the 2.2 ecotec engine(VIN code F), 102k miles. Should be the same as the L cars. Engine has a ticking noise from under the valve cover and runs rough. Sound...

Re: The joys of parenthood and VTI's.

The ECM does not need to be swapped. Keep the ECM that was originally in your Ion. I have close to 17k miles on my swap now and it is still running great.

Re: SL vs. ION?

This thread is about an SL car or an Ion. I offered a relevant opinion about my favorite Ion. Why would you even bring the Sky into the conversation?

Re: SL vs. ION?

I drive a 99 SL2, wife has an 04 ion Quadcoupe. The Ion burns ZERO oil, my SL2 burns a quart every 1500 miles. The Ion has more interior room, but has a much tighter turning radius. I'm not a fan...

Re: VTi to AF23 transmission swap

Muffhugger-

I reused both axle shafts from the VTi trans. They are both compatible with the AF23 trans. The passenger side simply drives into the transmission until the ring is seated. You...

Re: VTi to AF23 transmission swap

Orion-

Glad to hear the swap was a success...finally. You wouldn't think a tranny would be bad at 56k miles, but stranger things have happened. My AF23 is up to about 24k miles so hopefully it...

Could we keep this on topic about the tranny swap? 10 of the last 11 posts were completely off topic guys!

Re: Rod knocking...advice for rebuild

no no no. I've found that pistons are $33 each at rockauto.com. I haven't found a single thing wrong with my pistons, so they'll be cleaned, have the oil relief holes drilled, and receive new...

Re: Rod knocking...advice for rebuild

After talking with the wife and deciding that we're going to keep the car, I'm going to rebuild it the right way. It's getting a reman crankshaft and new bearings, replace the rod that was knocking,...

Re: Rod knocking...advice for rebuild

I removed the crankshaft and the #3 rod journal had a spun bearing. I measured everything with a digital micrometer. All rods measured the same, so i think I've lucked out in not having to replace...

Re: Rod knocking...advice for rebuild

Well, I really didn't want to pull the head off the engine, but it would be smart to at least re-ring the pistons.

Rod knocking...advice for rebuild

I just picked up a 99 SL2 today with the DOHC 1.9 engine. It has a distinct knocking which both I and the seller believe to be a rod knocking. I pulled the engine and have it on a stand now torn...

Re: VTi to AF23 transmission swap

To keep the information in this thread factual, the ECM and transmission computer do NOT have to come from the same vehicle. My wife now has 16k miles on the AF23 trans and not a single problem. I...

Re: Prothane control arm bushing available for Ion!

You know, it's hard to tell if the ride has become much harsher. I've always thought the Ion is a fairly firm riding car. I would have to say that the ride has not gotten noticeably rougher after...

Re: Want to go faster , use mobil 1 synthetic oil

Ever wonder why a golf ball has dimples all over it instead of a smooth polished surface? It's because the smooth polished surface creates more drag. Polishing a car does not necessarily make the...

Re: 2003-2004 Ion Auto AF23 Trans Fluid

As stated above, Toyota dealerships sell the T-IV fluid for under $5 a quart. My Jeep's transmission also takes the T-IV fluid, and I recently changed that with some Valvoline full synthetic T-IV...
