Re: 2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

So it turned out to be the idle air control valve... the alternator and battery are ok.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

Re: 2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

No other symptoms.

I have noticed the car will drop revs when the engine fan comes on... it might be the alternator, then. If the alternator is going, maybe the car is driving intermittently on...

Re: 2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

Thanks... I'm going to pull the battery out today and give it a charge. I got stuck in traffic again yesterday and the revs are dropping slightly (not as bad as stalling). Unfortunately, I think this...

Re: 2001 SC2 Operating Temp

Yes, my cooling fans turn on at just past the 1/2 mark if I am stuck in traffic.

3/8 is normal temp and it should stay the same when running A/C as it keeps the radiator fan on (leaving the fan...

Re: 2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

I should have mentioned that the battery light does not come on until the engine stalls out. It's possible that there is something unusual about Optima battery that doesn't read the same way as the...

Re: 2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

Thanks for the tips. I'll check it out when I get home.

I've owned the car since it was new and it is at about 125,000 miles now.

Re: 2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

The battery is about 5 years old. It's an Optima Red Top.

I'll check with the garage to confirm what they moved over after the swap. I know they replaced the water pump and the spark plugs, but I...

Re: 2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

Thanks for the info.

It's a manual transmission.

The whole engine was just replaced last month (2002 DOHC with about 75,000 miles) and the problem existed before that, so I think it's related...

2001 Saturn SC2 revs dropping at idle - engine stall

Hey guys,

My SC2 sometimes starts to drop revs at idle recently it has gone into dangerous territory (i.e., 200-300 RPM), even stalling completely on the highway in 2nd gear (stop and start...

Re: The Truth About Saturn: A different Kind Of Car Company

Great video. I'd like to see an in-depth follow-up someday (e.g., discussing the specific cars and years) too.

Re: Engine knocking sound

It turned out to be the connecting rod bearing. The mechanic is sourcing a used 2002 engine and I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Too bad people won't rebuild these engines any more (I...

Engine knocking sound

My engine started making a loud knocking sound this morning that seems to go in and out in volume (but never goes away entirely). I checked the oil and it was below the minimum line on the dipstick,...

Re: Grinding/scraping noise from steering at tight angles

I finally got these replaced. It was the outer tie rod ends (the garage used AC Delco Advantage #MES3238RL parts, according to the invoice). Everything else seems to be ok. It's kind of amazing how...

Springs and shocks for 2001 Saturn SC2

Are the OEM parts still in stock at this point? My SC2 is still running its original shocks and springs, but I think they are overdue for replacement... I took a look at the AMR coilovers, too, but I...

Re: Any experience with EBC brake products?

Thanks for the input. At this point, I might go with either the EBC Greenstuff or the AC Delco pads.

According to EBC's website: "Redstuff is only available for heavier and faster cars and does...

Re: Any experience with EBC brake products?

I'll look around for the Centric stuff and make sure the brake fluid is changed when the time comes.

Re: Any experience with EBC brake products?

The SC2 is a daily driver so it doesn't need that much braking on the street or the highway. I just got new Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season tires that are a big improvement over my old set of Kumho...

Re: Optima Red Top battery for 2001 SC2

The Red Top is still going strong. I charged it last weekend with an Optima 400 and it read at 75% capacity. I didn't need to make any changes when I installed it this one fits the stock battery...

Re: Grinding/scraping noise from steering at tight angles

Turns out the noise was caused by worn outer tie rod ends. I'll get new ones along with a suspension bushing replacement job later on.

Re: Any experience with EBC brake products?

I talked to my mechanic about the EBC Redstuff pads he said it would increase pedal effort when cold, paradoxically reducing your braking feel unless you upgrade your stock calipers.

He...

Re: 2001 SC2 Recommendations for Serpentine Belt

I ended up getting a Dayco belt. The mechanics said it was a pain to access they had to remove part of the front fender.

Re: 2001 SC2 Recommendations for Serpentine Belt

That's really useful info. I'll make sure to get a 778 if I use a Gates tensioner.

My belt squeaks occasionally, but it's been quiet for the last few months. Go figure. :ugh:

Re: Headlight bulbs GE Nighthawk, Sylvania Silverstars, etc.

This is really interesting... I remember reading about the HIR bulbs last year, but I didn't know they were a substitute for stock ones.

Thanks, guys! I'm passing these links to my friends.
