Re: Selling the Astra

Was just shopping for a used car in August and thought that pickings below $8k were slim. Bought an Astra base 5-door with 40,000 miles for $7k and felt that I got a great deal. Competing cars in...

Re: Heat shield for gas tank completely rotted.

Rockauto.com also has heat shields. This surprised me, would have expexted them to be dealer-only.

Re: Oil Filter Cap stuck on 2002 L300

Went 10,000 on last oil filter due to gorillas over-tightening the cap a couple of oil changes ago. Lube Stop did a free oil change for me as they said they could not get it off, so the last 4,000...

Re: Accessory Belt change - lw2 V6 3.0 litre

My tensioner was in overall nice shape but bearing was worn. Was able to buy bearing only at Advance Auto Parts for a nice savings over replacing entire tensioner assembly.

Re: Can the 3.0 V6 go to 300k

I did a barrage of repairs on my L300 shortly after acquiring it last year, and have put on 13k in 6 months with no problems at all. Now standing at 140k and plan to go the distance.

Non-routine...

Re: Brakes feel that they do not grip well

I usually replace rotors along with pads, but when I did brake service on my L300 for the first time since buying it, the pads were worn so evenly and the rotors in such good shape that I did not. I...

Re: Just Question about 2001 L200 exhaust manifold

gmpartsdirect.com seems to have removed Saturn from its catalog. :(

That was the first site I checked.

Re: 2004 L300-1 Auto Axle Seal - Drv & Pass sides

The spring comes installed in the outer seal, and has a coating of a petroleum jelly-like material to help hold it into a groove in the rubber. I think the spring could be knocked out during...

Re: 2004 L300-1 Auto Axle Seal - Drv & Pass sides

On the passenger side, the outer seal normally sticks out about 1/2" from the case while the driver side is pretty much flush, if that's possibly what you're observing.

There is a spring around...

Re: Need advice about my L-series wagon...PLEASE!

The underside of my car is remarkably rust-free, but there is rot along the side rail of my subframe, on the passenger side. I guess I will deal with it next summer, so have been thinking about it....

Re: 2004 L300-1 Auto Axle Seal - Drv & Pass sides

Way to go! I have to look into slotting rear struts because I have a lot of negative camber, though tire place told me it is within spec.

There is supposedly (because I have not been able to find...

Re: L300 issues... please help

The starting problem sounds like vapor lock caused by the fuel pump not holding residual pressure after being switched off. Fuel drains back to the tank, heat causes the line to be filled with...

Re: Help with 01 LW300 Timing Belt and Seals

The cams are clearly marked as to their (approximately) correct positions. I don't think you have to worry about installing them upside down or whatever.

My Haynes book recommends loosening the...

Re: 2004 L300-1 Auto Axle Seal - Drv & Pass sides

There is an inner sleeve. I first attempted to replace just the outer seal, and damaged the inner seal (sleeve) in the process, beginning the nightmare.

I don't see any problem with putting on...

Re: Help with 01 LW300 Timing Belt and Seals

I bought the same kit as you, but weenied out on replacing the seals as I was impatient to get the car on the road. I am presently planning to do them next year, and to replace valve stem guides as...

Re: loud vacuum sound from behind firewall.

The alternator in my wife's Buick was noisy like that for 3-4 years before I replaced it. Sounded like a supercharger or like the car was driven by an electric motor.

Re: Wrench service light and harsh shifts

Had a 20 mile trip this morning, very familiar route, and the light did not come on in the usual places. I think that the Lucas Transmission Fix was an effective temporary measure. Will post again...

Re: Wrench service light and harsh shifts

The charm broke yesterday when the wrench light came on after an unremarkable five mile trip on city streets. I was driving the car gently and shifting seemed fine.

I cleaned the MAF sensor with...

Re: Whats a good tire to buy?

Bought a set of these a couple of months ago, and they were the price leader at that time.

Good tires, with very nice ride, handling, noise. Wet performance is funny in that they will slip on...

I bought Lloyd's mats online, about $75 for a set of four for my L car. They look pretty classy.

Re: why to or not to buy another s series.

I'll throw in another vote for the Buick LeSabre. My wife drives a 97 that we bought in 2005 for $3200 with 25k miles and have been driving the whizz out of ever since. Super reliable, great gas...

Re: Learning How to Work on L-Series

The S-series simply had much better sales than the L, and so has a lot more grassroots support.

I agree that the Haynes manual is pretty good. It is my main source of repair information. I also...

Re: How did you get into Saturns?

My first Saturn was a 94 SC2 with 65k purchased in 2005 for $800 IIRC and driven for a few years. It was retired due to lack of opportunity to do the engine rebuild it needs due to poor maintenance...
