Re: White smoke/steam from under the hood.

Well, after lots of investigation and finally being able to get my car out of the city and somewhere I could take off my tire, it seems like I have blown a head gasket. :upset:

I'm not sure what...

Re: White smoke/steam from under the hood.

Turns out I lost very little coolant, but I'll check again later to make sure. I had to pour a little water in there and put a new hose clamp on. The coolant must have just shot right out onto the...

Re: White smoke/steam from under the hood.

Yep, I'm fairly familiar with the location of all of those hoses. Now I just need to find a flashlight so I can actually see in the basement of a parking structure. Hopefully I can find some coolant...

Re: White smoke/steam from under the hood.

170,000 miles

The coolant was what I was going to check first, but I had to go to class before I could let the car cool down enough to even get near the area. It's a relief to hear that there is a...

White smoke/steam from under the hood.

I have a 1999 SL1.

When I got to school today there was a sweet smelling smoke coming from under my hood. I was trying to identify where it was coming from. It seemed as if something between the...

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

I tried the brake cleaner spraying and after nearly getting high off of the fumes on accident I almost gave up on finding the vacuum leak. BUT I found it! There was a gigantic hole in a hose that I...

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

When I start the car it revs up pretty high, but I don't really know how high because the RPM meter doesn't read it immediately. Once it starts to read it's at 2000 RPMs and then usually comes down...

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

Yes, the ECTS is brass and it was replaced last February. I was just trying to get a better connection because I read that the connector can go bad when the ECTS breaks and leaks coolant.

I've...

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

Either this was not what was wrong with my car, or I did it wrong. I started the car a few times and it was idling a little bit lower, but then I jetted right back up to where it was before. I think...

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

I think so, like the kind you use for caulking showers?

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

Thanks, I've done quite a bit of soldering and wiring and understand the basic concepts of it. I am also quite familiar with shrink tubing having used it many times to protect wires when installing...

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

That's what I plan on! The only shrink tubing I have is way too big for those wires. Would it be sufficient to artfully use black tape and maybe cover it with some of that little black conduit?

Re: Replacing ECTS connector

Hey thanks! That's helpful, something I most definitely didn't know. Also thanks for the information on the other connector, I'm off to dig in the morning.

Of course I watched the video! They are...

Replacing ECTS connector

I think I am going to change the ECTS connector on my '99 SL1. I've done some wiring before and that shouldn't be a problem, but I'm nervous about getting the right part.

So, how do I get the best...

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

I took my throttle body apart, replace the TPS and the IACV, cleaned every surface again, made sure everything was on tight and tested the seal afterward with brake cleaner to look for vacuum leaks....

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

So I took everything apart and recleaned it. Tested my TPS with an Ohm meter and found out it's not so good anymore. Also the O ring around the IACV was all worn down and ripped, probably the reason...

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

I think I'm going to take it all apart in the morning and clean it all over again, and test my TPS. I might have not gotten everything as clean as I should and can retighten everything down. I also...

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

It was the lowest when I was spraying it about three or so inches to the left of the throttle body.

...the SES light came back on too.

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

I tried spraying the brake cleaner while the engine was running and the idle went down, but only about 200 RPMs. Would that be enough to show a vacuum leak? I'm going to try and tighten up everything...

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

Thanks for the input. I cleaned the EGR valve and throttle body and put new gaskets on both. They were absolutely disgusting. My car is now idling even higher. At around 1600 RPMs. I've driven it and...

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

Thanks I will try to do that this weekend too. The odd thing is that my car isn't even idling that high. It's more like 1,250 RPM, just a little above 1,000. I thought this was a little high but...

Re: Cleaning the EGR valve and other questions...

In responding to my own post I am now flushing the coolant system and figured out how where the EGR valve is and know how to take it off, we'll see how cleaning it goes.
