Just curious, did you ever try the hoist method? I just finished mine on my manual shift 1997 SW2 with no cutting but I think the hoist / cherry picker method is probably the best way to go.

I found the upper hidden 10mm center bolt was loose and leaking oil. I suspected there might be another leak so I decided to remove the timing cover and oil pan to reseal it. ...

See photos. Notice the "thin" gasket in both locations with NO LEAKS. Felpro, Bosal, etc each offer both gaskets not a "thin" vs "thick" gasket both use the metal ring to seal the the paper mainly...
