Do not dismiss the spark plugs
Check the plugs, wires and also coil posts for corrosion.
I had a cracked spark plug insulator cause a miss.

I assume 700+ has the ignition switch installed with the ignition lock cylinder removed, and he is going to use a screwdriver to turn the switch?

OK that makes sense, the springs go flat and that puts the pressure plate fingers farther from the clutch release bearing. Causing slipping and or insufficient clutch disengagement.

I had the same symptom, hard to put in gear. First was the most difficult. The hydraulics tested OK, replaced the clutch and it shifts fine.
You can have weak springs in the pressure plate...

I used A Fel-Pro gasket when I replaced mine and haven't had any leaks.
Use acetone to clean at the timing chain cover seams before applying sealant. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

The OP's 1998 SOHC engine does not have a plastic valve cover.
I would try to reuse it. Clean it with acetone at the timing chain cover seams and give it a try. All you have to lose is some of your...

Find anyone 2 years and older to press the horn button while you check for resistance at 28aa ("B").

I think he means the red wire on the volt meter and the center (orange) wire in the connector at the horn?

edit: just took a look the center wire isn't the orange one. He is probably is looking at...

Before you replace the horn you need to troubleshoot the wiring. Mine had a short between the fuse and the connector at the horn. Good fuse, no power downstream.

If I am reading this correctly you had a failure with the cable loop detaching from the cable end? Could that be caused because the SS repair doesn't have a ball end to allow the loop to pivot like...
