Re: Have You Experienced the Ignition Switch Issue?

Point taken, however GM was a private company back in 2004/2005 when this problem originally surfaced. The Gov was only interested in keeping the lights on during their tenure. All good questions...

Re: Have You Experienced the Ignition Switch Issue?

Never got the plug for my ION. Had 2 failed switches replaced by the dealer, one under warranty, one not and did one myself with a Dorman aftermarket ignition.

I never experienced the shutoff...

Re: Sway Bar slipping within bushing?

Depending on the model of ION, there are different size (diameter) sway bars. The size can be found a couple of different ways. Have the dealer run the VIN number to get the size or look on the...

Re: Ion hit.... Again

No leather, cloth on mine. I got a good look at it last week when we drove down to visit. I removed the plastic from the metal cross member that the trunk latches to and saw that it was bent in and...

Re: Ion hit.... Again

He is fine and the other driver was fully at fault. His insurance stepped up quickly to get it in and appraised.

Sadly it did not pass the ratio test and they have totaled the car. Repairs...

Ion hit.... Again

The ION got rear ended this afternoon. My son was sitting at a traffic light, the light turned green and the guy behind him in a lifted 4x4 floored it. Said he never saw the ION in front of him. No...

Re: They finally recalled the key cylinder switch!

I wonder if I can take my receipts for the 2 GM ignition switches they put in that failed paid for on my dime as well as the 3rd replacement with an aftermarket switch that works great that I put in...

Re: How long did your battery last in your ION??

I got 5yrs off mine as well. I like the trunk location. The battery is not subjected to the intense heat of the engine compartment. I went with a replacement from Auto-Zone. They had the Ion...

Re: Key wouldn't turn in ignition

I was able to nurse my ignition cyl along for quite a while by getting a new key made. Eventually you will need to change it out. Takes about 20 min to do. I went with an aftermarket unit since...

Re: Stripped both rear brake bleeder valves

That is a good point. You really don't want to put any sort of thread compound on them either since that may contaminate the break fluid / cause issues with the seals in the cylinders. It also...

Re: Stripped both rear brake bleeder valves

I ended up putting in new cylinders when I replaced the rear axle in my 2005 last March. I had a box wrench on the bleed screw and couldn't budge it. Didn't try the vise grips since with my luck,...

Re: Shock/Strut Replacement

I went with the KYB shocks and struts from Tire Rack for my 2005. Very pleased with the quality and price. The rear shocks are around 30.00 each and the front struts are around 90 each. Factor in...

Re: 07 Ion2 Rim Question

My son spun out last year and took a rim out with a curb (along with the rear axle). Used ones here were going for more than new rims. I ended up ordering a replacement from...

Re: clutch replacement and manual trans swap

Nice write up. I had the synchro on my 5th gear go a year ago. at 122K. I was uncomfortable doing the swap myself so I had a friend do it and helped out. Pretty much the same process. I went with...

Re: Clutch compatibility

Take it one step further, I replaced the manual tranny in my 2005 ION with one out of a junked 2007. I replaced the clutch kit with one that was 2005-2007 from Advanced Auto. No issues. Everything...

Re: Long Trip Performance

The IONs are easy to work on which makes many of the little things more bearable since I can do them myself. I have no doubt that if he keeps up with the maintenance, he can get another 100K out of...

Re: 2006 ION Key Stuck in Run position - quick question

I just changed my ignition cylinder Monday on my ION. I think it is caused more by the make and type of tumblers than weight on the key. My son only has the fob and the key and it still destroyed a...

Re: '06 Ion Sedan Lower Control Arm Bolt Spinning

You can try using a large flat blade screwdriver between the head of the bolt and the body. Force down on the bolt head while unscrewing. This may get the bolt out for you. The bigger issue then...

Re: The Clutch

I changed my clutch at 125K on my 2005 ONLY because my synchro in to 5th was bad and I replaced the tranny with a doner from a 2007. I figured that if I'm gonna have the tranny out, I might as well...
