The hole needed to allow you to remove the tank bung opening would be so large as to weaken the body structure.

The easiest way to drop the tank is on a lift.

If you don't have access to a lift...

No. They are not interchangeable - although the door is.. I found that out when my SO's 96 SC2 driver's side regulator died. Ordered a new part - didn't fit. Did that twice.....

That is not excessive.

GM would not replace an engine under warranty unless it used a quart in under 750 miles.

Over 1500 miles per quart is quite good.

Junkyard tranny - out of a matching car with a connecting rod stuck through the engine block.... That way it's a high probability that the transmission worked at the car's demise.

Jack the wheels up one at a time - and try forcing the wheel top to bottom. That is - one hand on top outside, other hand bottom inside. A bad bearing will usually be indicated by a felt clunk.........

Your best bet is buying used - from a retiring machinist who took good care of his equipment. I bought everything I owned...

What does the engine need to meet or exceed spec and how much of the work do you wish to do?

Does it need machining? How much are you willing to spend? What tools/machines do...

The bulbs do get hot when on for extended periods - like aircraft landing lights.

The trick is - they are not supposed to be turned on for extended periods..
