Re: 1998 SL Water in Trunk

Not a hard job to fix the unibody seams below rear window, I've done this to my 97SL and my brother in law's 00(?)SC. Just need some patience and a dry day or 2. A hair dryer or heat gun will help...

Sky general Qs

I have been looking at Skys or Solstices, seem to be reasonably priced, just had a few Q though.

Trunk space is very limited with top down?

Is there any storage behind the seats?

Do the...

Re: Stainless Steel muffler, or maybe not....

Yes probably short trips. My 1997 SL has 197,000 miles. But, in the past few years, I have driven maybe 4-5,000 per year. Only 2,000 so far this year, the car set for almost 100 days while I fixed...

Re: Stainless Steel muffler, or maybe not....

Well I guess I'll go with it, since it's at my house.

The factory muffler lasted about 15 years maybe.
Next steel replacement about 3 years.
Next Walker SS replacement about 4 years.

A...

Stainless Steel muffler, or maybe not....

1997 SL

Just bought a Walker stainless steel muffler off Rock Auto. Made in USA. It's the correct part no. To replace the rotted-out Walker I installed 4 years ago. And it's a southern car :(...

Re: Starter Motor Brands and New vs Reman

I have a 97 SL.

Original owner. 197,000 miles.

Just replaced the original starter with dbelectrical one last year(?). Mostly because the new one was relatively affordable. Also it's another...

Re: New clutch finally installed

Replacing a clutch was the problem I had, which caused me to join this remarkable forum 11 years ago.

I installed a non-Luk clutch then, and it wouldn't work. Removed and checked everything,...

Re: valve cover vents

The "jar" is a canning jar (jelly jar), suitable for high temps, I've had it there for about 5 years now with no problems.

The hose and jar circuit is air-tight, so no loss of vacuum.

It...

Re: Water pump

Yes a long flat tool across 2 bolts while you break the third. Ditto for Gear Wrenches too.

For the crank pulley, I used my HF impact wrench. And sat there holding the trigger for about a minute...

valve cover vents

(1997 SL)

Why are there two vent hoses from the valve cover?
1 into the air intake
1 is the PCV into the manifold.

They come from the same place?

So, can I put them into a T, into my catch...

Re: Serpentine Pulley Questions

I found the pulley bearings, at NAPA. Cheap. Pressed it into the pulley with a big C clamp.

Re: TB crud in SOHC cars

I was unclear in the OP. I meant the inside of the TB.

So a catch jar + hoses (which I have) should be on the PCV circuit? Not the other breather hose.

TB crud in SOHC cars

What is the source of most of the crud on the throttle body.

Is it that vent hose from the valve cover-to-air snorkel.
Or from the PCV hose.

oil in coolant fixed, but...

1997 SL

I check the coolant bottle every day. I still get a thin film of oil in it, which I suck out and replace with new coolant (maybe a spoonful or 2). But it's not that ugly green milkshake!...

my piston "soak"

1997 SL
197,000 miles

It burns little oil, if any, probably because I used synthetic for most of its 22 years.

Anyway, While doing the head gasket repair, with the head OFF, I turned the...

Re: A/C prob

After consideration, I'm buying a suction hose and receiver/dryer online, and taking the whole mess to the local trustworthy and knowledgeable mechanic

Re: A/C prob

The hose is attached to a metal pipe that goes into the "block", which bolts to back of the compressor.

The pipe sort of wiggles in its block. Probably not a good thing.

I'm assuming that's...

A/C prob

1997 SL
197,000 miles

A/C won't kick on (again).

Charged it in May this year. Worked for a while. Then I did the 2nd head gasket fix this year. I might have bumped the pipe- I checked all...

Re: Those small coolant hoses

Yes I took out the aluminum pipe. See my photo.
This is possible only if you removed the "front" motor mount and its firewall bracket :( which I did as part of the recent head gasket repair.

recycle coolant- how?

After my head gasket catastrophes, I have containers of coolant contaminated with oil.

I take used oil to Walmart.

What do you do with old coolant? Worse yet, oil + coolant mix?

Those small coolant hoses

1997 SL

As part of the head gasket repair, I also installed new timing set, water pump, and hoses.

After 22 years, I installed those 4 small hoses too. I had some trouble finding them. ...

Re: Head gasket- Aha moment :)

It's finally running again! It was parked for 94 days in 2019

Once I checked the torque wrench, I could feel the head bolts clamping.
