Re: Loud whine from my 1997 Saturn SC2 (~160k miles)

I'll take care of that some time this weekend. Fortunately I don't have to drive anywhere.

Re: Loud whine from my 1997 Saturn SC2 (~160k miles)

I got the impression from researching around that running it without a belt is a bad idea. Are you sure it's safe?

Loud whine from my 1997 Saturn SC2 (~160k miles)

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcfpTjir9RU

I'm pretty sure it's on the passenger side. This noise seems to have replaced the intermittent squeak that's been there for years (wish I could...

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

The torque wrench is for fixing the leak. And I understand all the benefits of doing it myself, but I can't afford the entry fee. The mechanic's labor fee is usually covered by the discount I get...

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

I would buy a Tauntaun if I lived in a place like that.

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

It was at the local Ford dealer (Akins), so they probably used whatever Ford recommends for a car that uses 5W30 oil. I'll have the mechanic do the change next time, and I'll bring the filter + oil....

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

Sounds like quite a scam. Oil is very confusing. :dizzy:

A specific recommendation would help a lot.

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

I vaguely remember reading something about problems coming from going full synthetic too soon. It has, as far as I'm aware, always run with dinosaurs. If that's not an issue, then this looks like a...

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

So no one has a suggestion for synthetic blend oil?

What kind of reader do you use to translate barks to error codes?

Re: 2003 Saturn VUE Transmission Belt Real or Fake?

I want to see the pictures out of pure morbid curiosity.

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

The trouble is getting all the tools (torque wrench, stands) to do it, which quickly eats up any savings made by doing it myself. Better to just top it off since it doesn't lose much between...

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

Took a while to find the right time to get it changed since I don't drive it much. They swapped the oil out with some synthetic blend, gave it a multi-point inspection, and gave the car a clean bill...

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

"Thing at the end" proved to be too vague. "Crosshatched area" was what I was looking for. The unoiled spot on the crosshatched area in that picture is lower than I let it go. Most of my driving is...

Re: Do I need to change the oil?

I check it regularly. I don't think I've ever let it fall further than 1/10th of the thing at the end of the stick.

Do I need to change the oil?

My 1997 SC2 has about 3000 miles on its supply of oil. The little sticker put on by the place that changed it last time says it's due for a change. How realistic is that?

Re: Click click crank

I'll go and have Advanced Auto check the voltage some time next week. What should I be expecting for prices on a used or new {starter, solenoid, alternator}?

Re: Click click crank

I know it's run by the belt. I assumed it worked like the AC compressor and only engaged when needed. If it's not something engaging in the engine area, why do I only hear it when I press the button...

Re: Click click crank

The lights dimmed a little bit when I turned the car off, but it was barely perceptible. I'm also pretty sure the alternator is fine because I hear something kicking in when I hold the window button...

Re: 3qts every 200 miles???

I always thought it was doing serious and quick damage once the light started blinking. Are you sure it's not a sensor issue? You might want to take it up to an auto parts place with a notepad and...

Click click crank

I think I just drained the battery by starting too much and using too much power, but it can't hurt to ask.

Drove 500 feet to Wal-Mart
Drove 2 miles to the grocery...

Re: Can a Passenger Seat become a Driver Seat ?

My intuition tells me that the driver's side seat would have subtle differences to account for usage (pushing pedals, turning the wheel, peering backwards), and that it could translate to differences...

Re: Restoring lost power

Mine was gray and covered with fuzz and bugs on the bottom the last time I changed it. It had a huge impact on performance.

When was the last time you checked the air filter?
