Re: 1999 SL2 Crankcase valve (?)

Sometimes you get the one with the plastic elbows and sometimes you get a chunk of 3/8 hose, just depends.

Re: Pinging / Spark Knock for Four Years on '99 SL

If it goes away with 93 octane fuel then what you were hearing was the interplay between the PCM advancing the spark to maximum advance and the knock sensor signal retarding it. It is normal and...

Re: 1999 SL2 Crankcase valve (?)

The hose in the picture is the clean filtered air intake to the crankcase. You do not want to suck unfiltered air into the engine as the silica dust contained will soon eat the rings and bearings....

Re: Pinging / Spark Knock for Four Years on '99 SL

Yes, the design is to run with the max timing advance just before detectable knock. It is credible to have degraded knock sensor sensitivity. The gen-3 relocated and redesigned the sensor as a result...

Re: AC "Tube" replacement? (discontinued pn: 21031290)

The cost of attempting a repair will way exceed the cost of a replacement. Either way it has to come out of there.

Aluminum welding is a touchy process on thin tubing that has been oil soaked for...

Re: AC "Tube" replacement? (discontinued pn: 21031290)

Pull from a pick and pull. That is aluminum tubing and the system has or had oil that was exposed to moisture in it at some time. I would also flush out the entire system unless you can tell the leak...

Re: Took a gamble, bought a tech2 clone (Tech2Win)

No BCM on a gen 2 Saturn. The BCM arrived on the 00-02 models.

Re: Pinging / Spark Knock for Four Years on '99 SL

Nothing constructive comes to mind.

I would suspect the info fdryer has provided should help you understand that this is not a harmful event as you are experiencing it and in some but not all...

Re: Pinging / Spark Knock for Four Years on '99 SL

The sound you are hearing only occurring under heavy throttle and load is not abnormal and as long as you have adequate fuel a non-issue. The only 2 things that would be causing an inadequate fuel...

Re: Pinging / Spark Knock for Four Years on '99 SL

There is only mechanical cam timing and the use of premium gas advances the spark timing considerably. This lowers the exhaust exit pressure and velocity. Exactly when do you hear this sound?

Re: Engine surging and stalling, engine temp gauge fluctuating, where do I start?

ECTS, ECTS connector, ECTS wiring. No splices in the ECTS wiring unless soldered --NO crimp connectors!

Best guess is you have a bad crimp connector in the wiring and this alone will cause your...

Re: Pinging / Spark Knock for Four Years on '99 SL

What most people call "spark knock or pinging" in these cars is the sound produced when the exhaust valve opens and the resulting shock wave hits the manifold. This is most noticeable in the cars...

Re: Question about adding r134a refridgerant

Just to answer your last question. The Saturn compressor is unique and not used in any other common automotive application. The original manufacturer is out of the business of making that compressor...

Re: Source for OEM top mount?

The OEM tends to last for many years IF the dogbones and trans mount are also good. Worn dogbones will soon trash the top and trans mounts.

Re: Good battery, nothing works

Problem is likely with the POSITIVE cable at the battery. Take your voltmeter and place the black probe on the engine block and the red on the red wire at the UHJB, NOT the battery bolts. If you...

Re: Opinions on white smoke

Shipping can knock things loose but it does not back out bolts. Mass rebuilds are a pig in a poke.

Car should be ready to run normally. That used oil works very well in the lawn mower.

Re: KYB Excel-G 234056

Those camber bolts are not rated for the OEM specified torque. JUNK. Any shop that whines they can not do an alignment without them is by deffinitio0n incompetent, find another shop.

Re: 2001 Saturn SL2 Intake manifold Coolant leak

Old aluminum manifolds are not a direct swap onto a 3rd gen, they do bolt up though. Primary issues are throttle body and fuel rail.

Re: KYB Excel-G 234056

The corrosion buildup exerts incredible stress on those fasteners. This is why ever hot riveted bridges fall down.
