coolant lights come on... but OK temp

the check coolant level and check coolant temp lights come on and off sporadically on my friend's saturn, while the coolant temp gauge stays in the 1/4-1/2 OK range. what could be causing this?

97 auto sl2, seems like coming from front, not sure about side. and it really occurs around 1.5k somewhat more sparsely. then as it climbs to 2.2k, it becomes more prominent.
