Re: 5 speed transmission questions

I've driven a ton of different manual trans cars, and my '99 has more rev hang than most of them (with the exception of a few newer econobox cars).

It's not bad to the point where revs will...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

For documentation purposes:
I replaced the timing chain and the noise disappeared entirely. I haven't yet diagnosed what part of the timing set went bad. I'm guessing it was the tensioner because it...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

We've got an update:
I pulled the valve cover again and checked for tension in the chain up top as well as down inside the timing cover.
There was significant enough play up top, and the chain was...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Are you saying you replace a quart with ATF before changing, or you put in ATF with fresh oil for the entire interval?

I could see the first one working well but I would be concerned about the...

Re: RPMs dropping fast between shifts, idle low

I know right? Going between this, my old Ford truck, and my friend's Miata is ridiculous. The Saturn has astronomical rev hang and both of the other vehicles will snap down to idle almost immediately...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I found a thread: http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234263

... in which a user suspects his timing chain is bad. However the video he posted sounds a lot like mine. Like, almost...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I pushed up and down on the length of chain visible between the cam gears.
I was barely able to move it in either direction -- it was almost unnoticeable.
I always try really hard to diagnose...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I have inspected it with the valve cover off. I didn't turn the engine with it off, but the chain had almost no slack in between the cam gears up top. However i think it's still possible for it to...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I'll keep trying your suggestions in the meantime. Hopefully it's a simple issue but I'm going to be prepared to replace the chain -- and it would be good preventative maintenance anyways.
Car has...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Since I can see it in person, I can tell the noise is coming from the chain-y area of the engine block. Thank you for all of the advice and ideas of course -- I'm glad we could (mostly) rule out...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Maybe it could be, but I'm still worried it's a chain noise. However I don't see how a chain could fluctuate like that based on temperature alone.

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I went and felt for an exhaust leak before driving today. Nothing yet, nothing was obvious.

I did however get this video of the noise reacting to some throttle input, tell me what you guys think:...

Re: 365,000 plus just died

Check your EGR valve.

My '99 had the perfect storm one day, right after I got onto the highway, and a giant piece of carbon got caught in the EGR and held the valve all the way open.

It didn't...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Alright, sounds like it probably is an exhaust leak then. I'd be okay with that (although I want to track it down when I can).
I've looked at my flex pipe before when I was diagnosing a noise caused...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

It gets faster when you rev the engine, however it seems loudest around 1200 RPM. It seems like it settles down in volume if you rev it higher and you don't hear it as loud when inside the car....

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I don't think this car has air injection unless you saw it in the video. It's a non-california 1999.

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I went out and got videos of the engine running dead cold and after warmed up, from under the hood.

cold idle with noise:

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Next oil change I'm going to try running a zinc additive in the oil.

I ran a can of seafoam in the gas recently and didn't notice a difference, although it was probably good to do. I wouldn't...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Sorry about the audio quality. I will get better videos soon to show you what it sounds like cold versus hot.

Exhaust leak sounds possible as it would expand and contract to seal the leak when...

Unknown engine noise when cold

I have a 1999 SL2 (auto swapped to mp2 manual), 189,000 mi.
It makes a constant ticking noise immediately upon cold startup and it doesn't go away until the temp needle starts rising. When warmed...

Re: 12vdc rig to drive water pump

Sounds like my problem!
Ever since I got the car it's been making this rattley noise like marbles in a can anytime I get on the gas below 1800 or 2000 RPM. It gets more intense if I give it more gas...

Re: Detonation due to Carbon Buildup

Here's an update: I replaced my belt tensioner with a new Gates model from Rockauto.com. The noise in question is gone.
I think the old tensioner may have been original with 188,000 miles. It looked...

Re: RWD conversion

I second the mid-engine idea. Take the Saturn engine and trans and put it behind the driver's seat so it will drive the rear wheels.

Then you can top the oil off while driving on the highway.

Re: Detonation due to Carbon Buildup

I suppose I forgot to clarify -- this particular DOHC has the SOHC transmission with 2 overdrive gears. The real magic happens when you reach highway speeds

Thanks chaos, I'll look into the fuel...

Re: Detonation due to Carbon Buildup

Very good points -- thank you for the replies!

@ fetchitfido:
I ran almost a full tank of 89 octane a few weeks ago - did not notice a difference, however it was only one tank. Typically I run...
