got the starting issue sorted, turned out my timing has somehow gotten way out of whack, retimed it and now it's running like a top.

it's cranking, i have fuel in the chambers and i have spark, so now it seems one of these things is happening at the wrong time

it's a single color truck, going with the same single color

that's what i did, but it took some doing, and i really needed to wet sand and/or buff it out after (never did....but i should've)

go for #3 if it has a crack, unless your junkyard thinks it's gold-plated. don't make the mistake i did, though; make note of whether your car and the donor car have pinstrips:upset:

but how would i know????? there's no rear o2 sensor, so it wouldn't throw a code or anything!:drool:


some things i've noticed so far:
my muffler is about the same size as the block from doris....

it's the e4od oldnuc mentioned (auto tragic, the biggest thing i don't like about it)

i'm already getting to go neck-deep into working on it, and wow... distributed v8s are a whole world away from...

It was actually a straight across trade.

And its not an inline 6...its a 5.8 liter v8.

I'm sure I'll miss Doris, but I only have a 4 mile commute these days, and I've been needing a truck more...

doris' coolant issues continue

several months ago, Doris finally got the inevitable leaky radiator, so i replaced it with the recommended one (it was clearly a gm part with the gm logo scratched off)
after replacing it, i checked...

i took it as a good sign. the first one off that line lasted my car nearly 17 years. the 2nd should last till she dies.

sounds like a flange bolt.
the big difference is the shape, which can be replicated with a bolt and a washer, but flange bolts are also often i higher grade of steel (12.4 instead of 10.2)

there used to be one i'd see everywhere that looked exactly like mine. same year, same color, same wheel covers, same domelight hanging on by wires (since fixed on mine :))

quick drive around the block and it is 100% smoother. no stumbling at all.
there was a fairly soft sound, somewhere between a tap and the pitter-patter of an exhaust leak pn sudden trottle changes....

always go to a locksmith or an old-school hardware store for keys.

they'll actually pay attention to what they're doing. make sure they use the side-by-side duplicator instead of the cartridge...

have you tried ace/true value/do it best?
a good hardware store will have a good selection of....hardware :D
and usually, if not, they'll know where you can get a better selection of fasteners....

changed the plugs just now.
here are the removed plugs, and i think we can safely assume which cylinder is giving me issues (1-2-3-4 left to right)...

Blocked off the egr ports with quarters, didn't help at all.
Checked the plug wires, 1 and 4 were not routed parallel. They are now, and the stumbling seems better but far from gone.
Picked up some...

the wires are older than the battery, but only because i replaced it last week :P
thy'er less than a year old, i think less than 6 months.
is there a test for the CPS?
i cleaned all the grounds...

checked for codes, no codes.
checked for sparks, no signs, but it wasn't 100% dark.

oh, i forgot to mention, it feels pretty rythmic when it happens. very regular pulse to it.

going to go out and check for codes and sparks, and maybe run the EGR test now.

i have not tested or...

battery died, got a new one.
radiator died, got a new one.
now a new problem.
I believe the proper term is stumbling, and it nearly feels like bucking.

but i have a '95 w/cali emissions, and they aren't looking to test those.
