Re: What did you do to your S-Series today...

Took the SL2 through emmisions testing here in Portland, Oregon. She passed without a problem! (I did have to remove the ScanGauge2 so they could use the OBD2 port) As for mods, I'm using the fixed...

Re: ATF change

I've had good results with Wix filters on other GM products, but my Satty is a manual.

If the Redline fluid meets Dexron 3 specs it should be fine, synthetic is better than mineral based ATF. If...

Re: Getting rid of the hazy headlights!

I used a $20 Sylvania kit that had several grades of sandpaper and a clear coat to apply afterward. It worked great, and it's been a year now. I also installed a set of Phillips +50 bulbs, and...

Re: Castrol Transmax DEX/MERC

Castrol is a BP product, looks like it tested out fine; http://www.pqiamerica.com/ATF%20MAY2013/CastrolTransmax.htm

Re: Need some new tires

If you drive 30K a year, maybe some Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 tires to get better mileage. Costco has them where I live. (Portland, Oregon) Tire Rack rates them fairly well.

Re: How much did you pay for your Saturn and how many miles did it have?

I'm familiar with Portland, and in fact, I have used a carwash in Pendleton to wash out a deer carcass. That got a few looks also!:D

Re: S Series Owners - Sign in Here!

1998 Saturn SL2, 5 speed. Closing in on 138K miles.

I've owned it for just about 1 year.

So far replaced the spark plugs and wires, ECTS with a brass one, PCV with the AZ 1009 PCV, installed a...

Re: Best spark plugs for 1998 sc2?

Oh boy! This is a debate subject on here. Use the search function and ask the same question....it's been batted around quite a bit.

That said, I'm running Champion double platinums in my SL2 and...

Re: Maximum coasting (no throttle) RPM

1998 SL2 (DOHC) manual 5 speed, Federal emmisions.

coasting idle 1100-1200.

In my daily commute there is a spot where I come off a bridge and coast until I come to a light at the bottom. The...

Re: Advisory on Valvoline 5W20

Good point on the sodium being a detergent, and after you pointed out the Mobil oil, I noticed it has Titanium in it, an anti wear additive that Kendall oil uses in it's add pack. Sodium's drawback...

Re: Advisory on Valvoline 5W20

Just for comparison, I'll post up the entire list of tested 5W20 oils, and then look at the additive package in each one compared to the Valvoline, along with the volatility numbers.

Re: Advisory on Valvoline 5W20

It might not be a big deal, but I thought it was unusual for a major brand oil to miss a specification. I'm a bit suspect of NexGen recycled oil, and I'm surprised at the price they want for it,...

Re: 97 SC1 failed California smog and getting worse...

I read through this, and I'll add replacing the PCV. After getting advice on here, I changed mine to the Autozone 1009PCV, which has a 0.10 hole in it with no moving parts. $3.00 cost.

If it...

Advisory on Valvoline 5W20

It looks like some off grade motor oil coming from Valvoline Nexgen. It earned an advisory on PQIA.

http://www.pqiamerica.com/Nov2013/Valvolinenextgen.htm

If I had changed my oil using this,...

Re: Weird whistle noise. Brake light coming on randomly

The squealing sound in combination with the low brake fluid light makes me think it could be a low brake pad warning, ie a little metal finger that contacts the rotor and makes a squealing sound when...

Re: 2001 SC2 Off / On Chirping Sound When Accelerating

Next time you hear it, tap the brake pedal. If it stops, it is likely a low brake pad warning device that makes a noise when the pads need replacing.

Re: Rough idle and knock sensor code

How many miles on the '96 motor? Did you install a new PCV with the different motor, a bad PCV will cause a rough idle. I've been happy with the Autozone PCV1009, it has the 0.10 hole in it with no...

Re: Possible Cracked Head or Gasket

Do you know if a compression check was done on the motor? It should be listed on the bill you got. If not, I wouldn't go back to that shop. The ECTS should have been replaced, as it is a known...

Re: How much do new wheels cost?

I have gone the wrecking yard route for extra wheels. Our cars came with 14 and 15" wheels, I'm guessing that your SC2 has the 15s. My last set of 4 factory aluminum wheels was $100 for a nice set.

Re: I Need Some Help Guys But Now With A Saturn.

.020 increase in a plug gap is pretty large, they must have been in there awhile. I'd change them out and see if it cures the problem. The converter getting red hot is from misfiring and not...

Re: Champion Double Platinum Spark Plug Experiment

Thanks for the update! I'm running the same double platinum Champions you are, with no problems so far, but I only drive 10K a year or less, so seeing you ran them 17K is good to know.

Re: Recommended plug wires

Orielly's Borg Warner "Nascar" wires have given me good service on several different vehicles over the years. I'm running a set on my DOHC right now.

Re: Possible Oil Leak

I'd check the valve cover gasket, pull the plug wires out of the spark plug wells one by one and see if there is oil on the boot or pooled in the spark plug well.

Re: winter fuel economy

Colder temps will cause mileage to suffer, park in a garage if possible, check your tire pressures, they drop in cold weather.

Re: Full oil, cold temps, and oil pressure light

Well, if an oil/filter change solved the 'tick', that's great news! Hopefully the problem won't come back.

Just for my own curiosity, what oil/filter did you use, and how long had it been since...
