Re: 2008 Astra crank no start

I would consider a monthly DIY alldata subscription for the Saturn Astra as the engine and codes are somewhat different from those in Europe.

Reading the Euro forums, the crankshaft and camshaft...

Re: 2008 Astra crank no start

This thread might help a bit
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136833

Maybe you can test the camshaft sensor with a DMM or scope or advanced scanner as that looks tough to change...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

Great.

We also had a minor vibration issue in the steering wheel sometimes around 65mph and that was a newish tire balance issue. We just swapped the right side wheels and test drove (no...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

I have seen several Astra timing belt service intervals from different manufacturers. The longest I saw was the shorter of 10 years or 100k miles (if I recall correctly). You can look at the Saturn...

Re: Oil seeping from valve cover gasket

Can't diagnose with a few pictures. So use extreme caution as that is a lot of oil to lose, especially if it were rapidly. And you could kill the engine.

You would get some minimal oil consumption...

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

Stripped and repainted roof rails with 2 coats of flat black Rustolieum spray paint. A few years ago, we refinished the rails using high-temperature coating which was not too durable.

Noted...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

Great! These cars handle very well for front drive. They are a bit sensitive to good wheel balance and alignment.

The paint on the bumper tops and aluminum roof rails are popular problems.

**In...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

How does it run? How does it look underneath (the photo is not very clear)? Are you happy with the purchase and trip?

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

The flex pipe is a popular fail item. Fortunately you don't have to worry about that for a while. Brake rotors get beat up by salt but that is the case for all cars in the salty areas.

A few guys...

Re: Replaced intake manifold so now I am a happy man

This is an interesting Canadian thread on a similar issue. Saturn mechanic said it was typically carbon deposits in the Astra.

Re: The last Saturn Astra owner.

I purchased the typical oil cooler rubber bits from a dealer a few months ago. The plan was to do do some preventative maintenance but am too busy right now.

I am in New London from time to time....

Re: Error code P2138

Did you remove the UEC (Underhood Electrical Centre), clean and let dry overnight? This fixed the issue for me.

The UEC cover is pretty delicate; the rubber sealing gasket is not very smart, the...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

Those headlights decent so a polish will help. We polish ours from time to time as the factory coatings were not optimal. If you want to clean the inside of the headlight lenses, there are techniques...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

That car has some cool Opel emblems on the hatch and grille. The XR model is fun, handles well, and has good storage. It is a 4 cylinder so fast enough but not a rocket. New this was probably around...

Re: Astra Tuning (wip)

I don't think it is but I have the o-rings and rubber gaskets so will do that for preventative maintenance some day. The header bolts are pretty rusty so not excited to do it.

Re: Astra Tuning (wip)

Did you see any leaking around or below the oil cooler (which is behind the exhaust manifold)?

The big gasket is the one that seems to fail from time to time on the z18xer; symptoms would be motor...

Re: Astra Tuning (wip)

You can't really see until you disassemble the strut as the wear would happen at the bottom of the coil where it contacts the strut. But if the rubber insulator is completely trashed you might see...

Re: Front Struts and hardware availability issues

The Bilstein B3 coil springs are back in stock at Autoplicity. There are 2 in stock for $32 each, which is a steal IMHO. Replace in pairs.

I think they are for the XE, not the lowered XR, but you...

The coil spring insulators look like these including the holes which might be for drainage; not sure if these are the right size. I reused the old ones....
