Just a theory . . . P0172 only sets after the PCM runs a number of basic functionality checks on sensors and then tries to set your fuel trims.

My theory is that the IAT circuit is one of those...

that code is one of the harder to diagnose/fix.

These engines tend to run slightly rich to begin with, so it may not take too much to trip the code. And sometimes it is a combination of things...

Third for new valves. Kit is under $10 (maybe closer to $5) for two valves and two new plastic caps.

There is a tool that allows you to remove the valve cores with no more than a loss of a puff...

+1, I ran Walmart Supertch synthetic for 5k miles all the time in my '98.
More likely, the PO never checked the oil between oil changes:dizzy:

I checked the oil on my 98 every week and added 3~6...

If the AC needs occasional refilling, there is a (very slow) leak. I'd try tightening the Schrader valves first since it costs $0 and can be done...
