Re: 2008 Saturn Astra XR Code C0642

If there is a shop you trust, that is an option. A high end scanner will be able to amass a large amount of live data and might be able to spot the true culprit. The trick is finding a shop that...

Re: Awesome z18xer engine video

Thanks, AF. That was a good watch. It is cool to see the little bugger torn all the way down. I even got a laugh when my wife couldn't figure out what language she was hearing.

Re: Replacing ecm and key fob

I've never known the swap of an ecm/pcm to work entirely without the use of a tech ll to program the host VIN. Sometimes the vehicle will start and run, but with the presence of multiple codes, other...

Re: Problem areas to look for when buying an Astra

I've not seen anything in the way of head gasket issues on the 1.8 in general, nor the Astra in particular. This doesn't mean that one is immune but it is not common. Maybe it's (over)due for a...

Re: Problem areas to look for when buying an Astra

I've been going through my recent memory on what I carefully inspected /or repaired on the 2008 I bought last fall and I think your list is comprehensive. I agree that it is a good vehicle,...

Re: Another Flexpipe

I got what was probably a very similar flex and secondary cat pipe section from AllStar Exhaust out of Canada. It was around $100. The fit and design was quite good, and no I don't think stainless is...

Re: Front Struts and hardware availability issues

I had previously seen that video, which does appear to have been produced by a professional organization, and noted the straightforward methods used that conflicted a bit with information elsewhere....

Re: Front-end Tire Wear

Excellent video all around. I've dealt with those rivets on the control arm and concur with just replacing the entire arm for all the reasons he stated. I didn't know you were once a Midwesterner,...

Re: Front-end Tire Wear

One other thing you can do at home is put the front end on stands and grab hold of each wheel and muscle them up/down, side to side and see how much wobble you find. 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock play...

Re: Oil for the Saturn Astra

I use a Dexos-2 compliant synthetic 5w30 in the Astra since I truly need the same for the 2.4L I own and it certainly isn't going to do it any harm. I also own a 4.2L I6 that seems very happy...

Re: The last Saturn Astra owner.

Agreed on looking elsewhere for ideas on the power steering leak. I don't think I've run across a complaint on the pump itself and I've done all the reading on the Astra I can find. I do believe...

Re: 2008 Saturn Astra XR

AstraFasta as usual hit every nail on the head. He has a ton of posts with good info if you want to do some scrolling. As to the point about the airbag, I just had one replaced in mine at no charge...

Re: The last Saturn Astra owner.

That's a hefty parts bill, C152. If doing all of that will buy you say, a couple years, then it may still be worth it. I tend to squeeze all I can out of my vehicles but it's best to take a hard look...

Re: Front Struts and hardware availability issues

The Sachs listing is comparable to the AC set listed, so no. Sachs did at one time offer a sport chassis option but that set has been discontinued. The curious thing for me regarding the AC units is...

Re: can't get axles out! Help!

+1 on rb6667's suggestion as I have had to use this method in the past too. Oddly, the Haynes has pictured a pry bar against the trans case to which I thought, 'I'd never do that.' LOL

Re: can't get axles out! Help!

According to the Haynes manual, there is nothing unusual about these shafts. A pry bar is *supposed* to pop them out. They do however mention a circlip which aids in retention so it's possible you...

Re: Front Struts and hardware availability issues

Hola! It's good to hear that you've sourced all the major components in your choice of flavors. I'll give you what I can on your questions.

1) Indeed, Moog used to be a top-shelf OE replacement...

Re: unknown part

I'll go with a piece of exhaust heat shield. Probably from somewhere above the resonator. I had to replace a number of fasteners on mine because although the shield itself was in good shape the...

Re: Replaced the Cabin Air Filter

Finally getting some nice weather so decided to replace the cabin filter. Other than having to be a contortionist it wasn't a bad process. Appreciate the information here as it is buried deeper than...

Re: Front Struts and hardware availability issues

I think you were remarkably restrained given the fact that he offered you Monroe in lieu of Bilstein as if they were interchangeable. The fellow must have been a nepotism hire. Thanks for the laughs,...

Re: New here, new to Saturn

Welcome aboard!

I think Rock Auto has the most reliable catalogue and a decent array of availability, but yes Amazon and eBay are the best price sources often. I can get some parts in the city...

Re: Car sputtering, misfiring under load, Timing time?

You didn't mention any check engine lights on, so I'm guessing we've no codes to go on. Off the top of my head, in a "better than a timing belt" scenario, you may well have a restricted exhaust. If...

Re: Another flex pipe repair or a new exhaust section?

I used an oxygen sensor socket and a breaker bar. It was stubborn but did finally come loose. Actually the worst part ended up being trying to fish the pigtail all the way up into the cavity above...
