Re: 1996SL11.9L's 2002 SL1

It's hard to beat that kind of MPG return.

I've tried a few times when traffic was light to upshift that early. I just can't bring myself to do it. I think I'd get run over trying it...

Re: Just How Fast is a Saturn SL2?

It's the internet, and some "chiefs" are schooled and all knowing with their first search. Toss in some BS, some misdirection, and some flat out lies, and they often soon have a following from those...

Re: Coolant coming out of resivour Cap

It can vary some brand to brand and between types (PG vs EG), but in reality antifreeze/coolant mix impact the freeze protection a great deal more than it impacts boiling protection. The pressure in...

Re: Failing thermostat or ECTS?

That warm up time is what really helps the MPG, especially when it gets cold out again. Though people claim otherwise, I don't think the lower operating temp hurts all that much myself. Our car ran...

Re: A bit sadly, soon to no longer be a Saturn owner

They all have to go sooner or later. As for the memories and emotional attachments, that happens as well. I kept a truck I really didn't use for years for such reasons, but finally let it go.

Re: Whats your MPG?

Even with imperial gallons, that's way up there at the top for most Saturn owners. What kind of drive speeds/distance/etc do you usually deal with?

I can't remember any trip that I've taken where...

Re: Power steering fluid...

I've seen nothing indicating that Transynd has been changed. A quick email to Castrol would verify if it has. The confusion might be due to smoke and mirrors, or might be due to the Transynd RD...

Re: EGR valve problems

That's exactly why you block it. With no EGR flow, you can't get too much flow. If it runs rough blocked, you move on to checking other possible causes.

Re: What Saturn model gets the best MPG?

Really when all is said and done, any S Series with the Sx1 fifth gear will pull really good MPG on the highway. Around town the gearsets don't seem to matter as much and the twin cam cars come...

Re: Power steering fluid...

The only gallons I've seen clearly stated that the fluid meets the TES-295 spec. It's possible the newer labels aren't as clear, or maybe they show the TES-295 and the TES-389 spec. There are loads...

Re: Gen 2 temp gage behaving like a gen 1

If you have the live data, just use your data to know your gauge on your car. People have been led to think that they are all the same, and they aren't. Truth wins over theory every time.

Re: EGR valve problems

You could do an EGR block to nail down if the codes are do to the position sensing or flow, or if the rough idle is in fact due to the EGR.

Our from the factory EGR bit it after a cleaning or two....

Re: Groan while steering not always audible

Sounds to me more like a PS pump issue, but the only way to know is to troubleshoot and eliminate other possible causes. It sounds as though your PS pump might be leaking, and if so this is a...

Re: Power steering fluid...

Repeating misinformation for years about TES 295 and/or other Allison certifications will still not make the information true. They openly list certified fluids on their web site, and have for...

Re: decided to sell my car

Clean car. I doubt many are seeing this, as this forum section is slow. I'd post it in the S Series forums if it was me.

As for price, I do think a lot of S Series owners are just looking for...

Re: Sudden massive transmission leak

Now that's a good idea. Being that it seems more than a few people have had tranny filters loosen up, it might be smart to make some good use of safety wire pliers.

But I suspect some people...

Re: 2000 Saturn SL1 Rev Hang(?)

I've seen quite a few posts with people talking about the excessive time of the rev hang on their cars, with many saying all S Series cars do it. I know in one thread many were stating a 3 to 5...

Re: Car prep after sitting a year or so?

I'm a firm supporter of truth in advertising when getting rid of vehicles. That said, I often opt for a reasonable price to sell quick as I don't want a bunch of tire kickers wasting my time. So...

Re: smacked a curb (but was already rattling a bit)

Best bet is to jack it up and check things out for wear. The initial rattle could be tie rod ends or LCAs. Neither is expensive or hard, and both are normal wear items. It doesn't take much to...

Re: Wierd occurance after every cold start

One of the members here recently posted about a stumble of sorts at a certain coolant temp IIRC. You might have something similar going on. But my first suggestions would be to check the basics. ...

Re: Car prep after sitting a year or so?

That doesn't look so great, but people buy S Series cars that don't look great all the time. If it runs and drives decent (assuming a steering wheel is to be installed) you never know who might pick...

Re: Bought a beater

Saturns are often good as the "beaters" that are easy to maintain and have easy to deal with common problems. The SOHC isn't going to impress with performance, but does great with commuter duties...

Re: Bonehead Saturn Craigslist find of the day

Just a small crack in the block and leaks coolant, not street legal, and looks well.... different. What's not to like about a car as overpriced as this?

Re: Clear coat removal

It can either be a real PITA or very simple, and depends on how it's degrading. I've seen a number of people remove large sections of clear using the plastic razor blades (or a real blade and...
