Re: 2001 Saturn SC1 won't start

I just had a similar issue myself, except the dash lights would come on and then flash and basically give a light show, but the car wouldn't start. I checked the battery cables and the red one had a...

Re: Intermittent No Start - 2000 SL

Thanks, cd! Yes, it appears that I had a similar issue as you did. I took the battery cables off and the red (positive) cable had a lot of corrosion between it and the battery terminal. After...

Intermittent No Start - 2000 SL

OK guys, I have this really weird intermittent no start problem with my '00 SL. Sometimes it won't start with the security light flashing along with most of the other dash lights (oil light, check...

Re: Compare How Much Oil Your S Series Burns.

I have a 2000 Saturn SL (SOHC engine) with about 91K on the clock that was purchased at about 52K. I have used Amsoil 5W-30 synthetic for the vast majority of the time I've had this car. For the...

Re: Persistent steering-wheel vibration at highway speeds

Check the balancing of your tires. I had this problem for quite a while and it went away when I had my tires rotated and balanced (free since I bought them from Sam's Club). The brand of tire...

Re: How old are you? And what's your vehicle history?

47 years old

Here's my vehicle history:

1978 Honda Civic (dubbed the "Yellow Submarine" due to its color, which was mixed with some typical Michigan rust!)

1986 Honda Civic

1993 Nissan...

Re: Occasional Intermittent High Idle When Slowing Down or Coming to a Stop

Thanks, guys! I think I'll go ahead and change the TPS since it's only about $30 or so. I did clean the throttle body a little while back using Amsoil Powerfoam while the engine was running. Might...

Re: Occasional Intermittent High Idle When Slowing Down or Coming to a Stop

Thanks, td! Is the throttle position sensor pretty much the only thing that does this or should I also look at the IAC and/or EGR?

Occasional Intermittent High Idle When Slowing Down or Coming to a Stop

I couldn't find any info specifically on this when doing a search. Once in a while, the idle on my 2000 Saturn SL will go up to 2000 rpm or so instead of dropping down to about 900-1000 rpm or so...

Re: New brakes and suspension?

Hello and welcome to Saturn Fans! You're probably looking at around $200 to get the front brake pads replaced on your Saturn. Maybe a little less than that, including parts and all. I'm not sure...

Re: what to look for when buying S-series

Watch for intake manifold gasket failure in late model (2000-2002) SOHC S-Series. This can show up as higher than spec idle (900 to 1000 or higher rpm instead of 750 rpm) and will eventually turn on...

Re: Healthy Saturn oil usage

My 2000 SL uses roughly 1 quart per every 2000 miles. It seems to use more oil in the second half of a 3000 mile oil change than in the first half. Is that typical and why would it do so? I...

Re: Help with P0301 error on 2001 SL1?

I figured that was it! Your symptoms were virtually identical to what happened with my car. The good news is that you will probably not see this particular problem again, provided the mechanic...

Re: Help with P0301 error on 2001 SL1?

I recently had very similar symptoms in my 2000 SL as you're having with your car. It would idle around 800 to 1000 and occasionally throw a P0301 or some other code. I would clear the code and...

Re: How-to Replacing heater core w pictures

Nice! How much coolant came out of the heater hoses when you removed them? Did you pinch them to keep coolant from coming out? Did you have to add coolant after replacing the core?

Re: How To Diagnose/Solve High Idle Issues

So is the correct idle speed for an SL SOHC engine 750 to 800 rpm? Seems so from the response to Saturn babe's question. I have noticed that since the weather started getting cold here in Alabama...

What is the normal idle speed for the SOHC engine for both manual and automatic trannies?

Re: Synthetic Oil vs Standrad Oil

I have run my 2000 SL on synthetic for almost the last 4 years (although I've only put 16000 or so miles on it during that time!) and I can decisively say that it has dramatically improved the gas...

Re: '01 SL1- need code/help

How long's it been since you changed your spark plug wires. My SES light went on a while back on my '00 SL and I tracked it down to the plug wires. Replacing them solved the problem. In my...

Re: Mpg?

I've been getting 39-40 mpg, mixed city-highway driving (mostly to and from work, a little running around town) on my '00 SL. I use Amsoil 5W-30 synthetic motor oil, which has increased my mileage...

Great post! I think you've covered most of scenarios with that diagnostic. In most cases, replacing the plugs and/or plug wires should solve this problem. In my case, it was the wires. If your...

Correction to last post:

I put the wrong gas cost in for the Caravan: it should have read $2300 for gas, not $1300.

Redoing the numbers it comes out to about $0.24 per mile, still pretty good.

I've done quite a bit better than 33 cents a mile on my '93 Nissan pickup, which is the oldest vehicle I have and the one I've driven the longest (almost 10 years). Here's how the figures stack up:...
