How long should an aftermarket CPS last?

I have been fighting a stall/start issue for quite a while. I replaced the PS about 2 years (20k miles) ago. I have also replace just about every component in the starter circuit, all of which seemed...

Stalling and won't restart until cool

I have a 98 SL2 (manual transmission) that has experienced a few stalls. The common item seems to be that the engine had been running for at least 10 minutes, and it is when I take my foot off the...

Re: Tie Rod Castle Nut

I tried bumping it with a rubber mallet, and it wouldn't stay, but using the information that there is a locking taper, I just used a large pair of channel locks to hold them tightly together and...

Tie Rod Castle Nut

I am trying to reinstall my steering knuckle after having a new bearing and hub pressed in, but I have run into a sticking point tightening the castle nut on the tie rod.

Re: 98 Saturn Intermittent Start issue

Thanks for the tip, Madpogue. I went ahead and took the starter off and had it check at AZ, as expected, it passed their tests. I reinstalled it and of course the car starterd right up. Since this...

Re: Bad starter or alternator or..?

Does the engine crank at all? Check the threads for CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor), $15 at AZ. A lot cheaper and easier to get to than the starter. I just pulled mine today, and it is a pain.

Re: 98 Saturn Intermittent Start issue

Thanks for the help fdryer. It looks like the clutch switch is good, I jumpered the relay, but that didn't work, and I am now going to pull the starter off and check that. As I recall, the starter...

Re: 98 Saturn Intermittent Start issue

I have finally gotten the time to start troubleshooting, so I looked at the clutch switch. My Haynes manual says that the switch is normally closed (clutch not depressed = continuity), and that with...

Re: Car not starting sometimes

Search the forum for starting issues before you replace the starter. I wasted the money and it turned out to be the CPS. Can you give a bit more info? Does it make any sounds?

98 Saturn Intermittent Start issue

I have a 98 SL2 with a manual trannsmission that is experiencing starting issues. On a few occasions (all when leaving work) my car will not turn over. When I switch the key on, all of the electrical...

Re: Oil Soaked Spark Plug

I would advise checking the resistance on your new set of wires. The last set I bought from AZ had 2 of 4 out of spec. My old wires were still in spec, so I just reused them.

Does anyone have any...

Re: Wheel Bearing seems OK

Growser,

You were right about this not being too difficult. I borrowed a press to try pressing out the hub/bearings, but after 2 hours of trying to remove the snap ring, I took the knuckle and hub...

Re: Wheel Bearing seems OK

Thanks for the advice. If you don't think it is life or death, I'll swing in to Harbor Freight next week and grab the stethoscope as madpogue suggested.

Re: Wheel Bearing seems OK

I tried rotating the wheels with my hand on the springs, but there was almost nothing coming through the spring. Slightly more on the left side (which still had the brake pads, etc. attached) than on...

Wheel Bearing seems OK

I have a 98 Saturn with 103k miles. I put new tires on the car a few months ago, and I noticed afterwards that there appeared to be some road noise. I just assumed it was the tires. Two weeks ago, I...

Re: This is driving me crazy

You may want to look at the CPS also. I mention that because of your comment of it acting like it wants to turn over. There are many threads concerning CPS. A real easy one to change.

Re: 1996 SL2 Starter Replacement

Richpin,
Are you related to that old comic book hero, The Atom? He could shrink himself down to the size of an atom to get in those places, but I thought that was just fiction!:whoa:

Re: 2000 SL tail light/back up light problem

It should be available at any Auto Zone or a dealer. I believe the last one I bought a few months ago was about $15.

Re: 2000 SL tail light/back up light problem

I've had to replace the switch in my 98 twice. Total replacement time was about 5 minutes.

Re: Changing the ECTS....Call My Wife

Re: I need help. Please. 99 SL2 wont start

Maybe I'm missing something, but did you ever replace the CPS? BarnOwl made the original suggestion, and I know that was the final solution when I had similar issues. For as cheap and easy as it was...

Re: Brake question???

I was unable to get my impact wrench on a couple of the bolts because there just wasn't enough clearance. I found a long pipe gave me great leverage on my socket wrench, but make sure you use a 6...

Re: 97 SL2 - Rough startups, strong gas smell

This would have been my guess. In the week before my ECTS went completely nuts (huge crack along it), I had similar symptoms.

Re: Jacking up the rear on a saturn SL sedan?

I'm with BarnOwl. I've got an MS in Engineering Mechanics from Penn State, and I'd just remind you that metal is a lot tougher than cinder blocks. If a jack stand starts to yield, you'll probably...

Re: yes, another hesitation thread.

My hesitation taking off was related to a cracked ECTS. It was only a 20 minute job to replace and the car is running like new.
