Re: acetone in fuel tank

Tell you what you can blindfold me any day any time and fill my daughter car up with your holy grail 87 octane instead of its higher octane normal diet and I will know it instantly. The difference is...

Re: acetone in fuel tank

I always like this when I see this. It is "tuned" at factory to TOLERATE 87, not do its best on it. (This is why EPA MPG tests have been conducted with 93 octane since 80's but they are not required...

Re: acetone in fuel tank

If you stop trying to use 87 octane you will not have this "talk" problem sometimes and likely better MPG and at a lower net cost per mile too. I cannot even remember that last time I bough 87 octane...

Re: acetone in fuel tank

Yes acetone can be really hard on your fuel system. The myth survives because people want to believe magic additives that increase MPG. (Kinda like 40 MPG carb's in the 60's that the oil companies...

Re: 1997 SL1 Have to try to start twice before it will start up.

My daughter 97 SC2 has done same thing for 2 years. New filter helped it some. Nothing is gained with extended cranks with this problem. If it does not catch in a few seconds, release key to run and...

Re: SL on E85

One little note on E85 in older cars. It seems that you do not just has to worry about fuel lines and injector size but a more pressing issue. It seems that E85 will conduct electricity pretty well...

Re: Long distance trip. Recomended oil weight?

It might help MPG in cold weather but not hot. Best tank I ever got out of daughter 97 SC2 was with 10w30 and it was a bit over 41 MPG. Last tank was 36.9 in urban rural driving in cool weather with...

Re: Long distance trip. Recomended oil weight?

What is best for you car new vs old is a different matter. Many around here have a affinity for 5w30 even in older engines using oil. Nobody but GM even uses 5w30 anymore. The reason is the high VI...

Re: Rebuilt SL2 still burning oil

Did you hone the cylinders to break the glaze and help rings seat quicker too?

Re: manual transmission in the future

I feel that manuals are going to be a bit of a novelty in the future and not of much value otherwise. Automatics have gotten a lot more fuel efficient and in some scenarios they can actually do...

Re: Engine Pinging Intermittent

It can. The way it works is that when you start engine up and it idles, the knock sensor takes a "picture" on background noisy level in engine and uses it for a base line to detect knock. If sensor...

Re: Fuel Economy Mods?

36.9 MPG last tank on a 97 SC2 with 137K miles and a automatic that my daughters take to college. Driving is all urban and rural with no highway and using 89 octane fuel in cooler weather (93 in hot...

Re: Engine Pinging Intermittent

Bad knock sensor. It is getting weak and not masking the octane needs of your engine well. Usually it hears knock before you do with low octane fuel and retards spark to mask it (this is the only...

Re: Fuel Economy Mods?

Yes and no. There is about 125,000 BTU's in a gallon of gas and this BTU heat energy released when it burns is what expands the hot gasses in cylinder and drives piston down. Less fuel, less energy....

Re: Fuel Economy Mods?

There is no "magic" injectors here. MPG is determined by the weight of vehicle. its rolling resistance (wheel/tire/bearing drag and aerodynamic drag) and usage, speed and terrain (flat or hilly) and...

Re: Oil Pressure

Generally, it is always a good idea to plastigage a crank when installing it. I confirms what actual fit and clearances are.

Re: Oil Pressure

Two things, one you need to do a pressure check with a direct gauge and two, did you mic crank journals or plastigage them? The crank may be worn undersize to the point that new std bearings are a...

Re: Automatic tranny seems to stay in a gear too long?

My first guess here is engine performance because shift points are linked to engine performance and output relative to throttle position. If engine is performing sub par the shifts will be delayed....

I have had no problem with them. Last ones I used were on a 91 car with 140K on it many years ago. They lasted another 70K miles before car was totaled in a freak wreck. They went one to be used in...

Re: What's the price of gas where you live???

No the government need to get tuff on fuel economy standards and stop letting big SUV's slip through the cracks. It will take time but long term it will help. Detroit has made it a passion last 10...

Re: What's the price of gas where you live???

This it true but gas stockpiles are higher than projected and demand is down nationally so trade price on it is dropping even though oil is been going up still a bit. Heating oil/diesel stocks are...

Re: What's the price of gas where you live???

I think gas prices will ease because the trade price on stock exchange has been dropping. Diesel/heating oil is still skyrocketing.
