Re: Sl2 1997 Automatic takes forever to start!

I do agree.... I just hate it when people post a problem and then never come back and post what actually helped/fixed their problem...

Will start a new topic and be sure to update it when I...

Re: Sl2 1997 Automatic takes forever to start!

And no offense to anyone who likes the "turn key, wait, and then start" solution to this problem, but that is not fixing anything... lol I know that works, and have done it, but there are still...

Re: Sl2 1997 Automatic takes forever to start!

Guess I am confused... This has nothing to do with the 2001 SC, and that is why I made sure to note that it was the 1997 SL... lol (The 1997 SL was my second car and was handed down to my brother,...

Re: Sl2 1997 Automatic takes forever to start!

I have what seems to be a very similar problem, so figured I would verify that it seems to be my issue.

1997 SL

Cars seems to start fine in the morning (when I would assume the fuel pressure...

Re: roll start?

I would personally use second. Just make sure you have the key turned to the on position too (have seen people forget to do this).

Scratches on side windows

Anyone else have this problem? I just bought an '01 SC1 and noticed some scratches on the outside of the window from it being rolled up and down (manual windows). Is there a common problem with the...

Re: funky 2-3rd shift after doing the input shaft nut

lol... that does not help me... Might just try the input shaft nut and hope that takes care of everything.

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

Yeah, you are right about that. It was such a downer to do all that work to find out the very first part I put back on the short block was incorrect. DOH! I should have done an engine swap, but I...

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

Car is back together and runs great. Been beating the hell out of it and she takes it like a champ. Redline on a fresh motor feels so good.

Re: Low Oil Pressure

With the description of your "maintainance schedule", I would say you should look at your main and connecting rod bearings as your "first look" for the low oil pressure. I am sure they are WAY out...

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

I did note it just like I did on my 3800 (which has a WEIGHTED flexplate, so VERY important). But the crank got replaced, so my marks were no longer going to line up. I installed the flexplate the...

Re: Starter solenoid terminals actually rotate... is this right?

If you do end up needing a starter, I have a spare that I could part with (from a junkyard). I should know for sure tonight if I do not need it. Let me know.

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

Leave the Saturn to be different then EVERY other Automatic car I have worked on. After pulling the flexplate cover the flexplate is indeed on backwards :upset::cry:

Guess the motor is coming...

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

So the lip goes TOWARDS the motor and the smooth side towards the outside (this is opposite of the way the 3800's mount up).

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

Did your thumb test on the one that was off the car. The gear does NOT free spin... It works as it should and I even pressed somewhat hard (and it just tries to pull my finger in and "eat" it...

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

So you think the junkyard starter is bad with the exact same problem??? Is this a normal Saturn starter problem??? Not doubting you, the odds just seem very slim that they would both have the same...

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

Went to the junk yard and bought a $20 starter. tested it before I left. It works. Went home put the starter on and hooked up jumper cables to the car (since battery is dead). This starter did the...

Re: '98 DOHC Starter?

Is there anyway to test it off the car to see if the solenoid is popping out the gear to engage the flexplate?

'98 DOHC Starter?

I just got the car back together and went to start it. Battery is dead, so I went to jump it. I think the starter might be bad. Everything is getting power (I know, not a good "battery test", but...

That is kinda what I was thinking, but I do not have one to compare it too... lol I do not seem to have that piece anywhere that I can tell... But the car did come to me "partially" disassembled...

Re: How many here with the DOHC gone over 250k with the stock timing chain?

The car I bought went at ~ 93,000 miles when the timing chain broke. I do not know the history, but it had obviously been having problems for a while. I say abuse/lack of maintainance caused the...

Re: Is this bad?

Yeah, I compared the sprocket to the "teeth" marks and it lines up about perfect. But with it NOT being that front main bearing, I cannot think of what else it might be.

I will pull the oil...

Hmmm... So now I am still trying to figure out what that big piece of metal is... It is niether a connecting rod bearing nor a main bearing. See all the pics below. I also have closeups of the...

Re: Is this bad?

You are right on Sky King with everything you have said. I keep hearing "replace" the engine... With what? Only thing I would consider replacing it with is an BRAND NEW one from Saturn which would...
