Wrench Re: 96 SC2 had a talk with a rock

It's not really that much work, just 4 torqued-to-all-hell main mounting bolts, 2 motor mount bolts, 2 bolts for the rack and pinion, 3 exhaust downpipe nuts, and the 2 ball joints. After that it's...

Wrench To summarize the old thread...

The thread he links to has a whopper of a first post, so here's a short summary of everything in the original thread.

Problem: Oil leaking from under the head near timing cover on intake side.

Re: High idle issues, a few questions

No such thing as a low mileage Saturn around here. 180k is the lowest I've ever seen on one. Sis killed that one in 6 days. :p

Re: High idle issues, a few questions

Considering how common a problem this is with Saturns, I would have to disagree. Picking up a TPS at a junkyard will likely leave you with 2 busted TPSs. Buy it new, at least then if it glitches you...

Roll Eyes Re: Top 10 after 110K

My sister is lucky to get 15k out of a set of wheel bearings. Still haven't figured out how she manages to do that. Probably has something to do with her taking 25mph turns at 60. "Look, ma! No...

Checkered Flag Re: What did you do to your [sister's] S-Series today...

I finished my sister's Frankenstein '99 SC2 rebuild. The engine consists of parts from 4 ruined (by my sis) S-Series DOHCs and over $400 in new bearings and seals.

Motor #1 (2000) donated:

Wrench Re: New DOHC Head Cracked!

Either that or someone at the shop is fooling around with your stuff. I had a friend who told me about screwing up little minor stuff on this one guy's car and then fixing it before the guy came in...

Re: New DOHC Head Cracked!

I had similar issues with my sister's clutch. With hers the slave cylinder's end wasn't properly seating in the throw-out arm.

Also the slave cylinder can be a bit tricky to put in at times....

Re: missing part identification needed

I agree, it's likely a bad ground. Metal near the ground's mount point probably got a bit bent in the wreck and loosened the connection.

If not that, then check for a crossed wire or one with...

Re: 98 dohc interchangeable covers

S-Series swap guide is always a good place to check for those answers first. It's pretty complete.

It told me about how screwed I am that my sister bought an early-'99 SC2. :dizzy: (They only made...

Re: ticking problem now

Are you sure you put it back in time properly? Sounds like you might have got it off a few notches and struck valves.

Put it in neutral and turn it by hand. If you feel it bind up, you need to...

Re: 99 sw2 engine lopes at idle, runs great on the roadi

First, I'd check for a vacuum leak. Just listen for a hissing noise.
Intake manifold gasket sometimes will start to leak around the bottom of #4 due to coolant seepage. The hose that connects the...

Wrench Re: 200,000 Mile Club - With Photo

Priced a bottom end rebuild for my sis's '99 SC2 last night. Expect to pay about $275 in parts. That's for all crank + rod bearings, oil pump kit, rings, and main seals.

Re: 200,000 Mile Club - With Photo

Well, being in Chicago, I would think most people would be driving American brands, since you're so close to Detroit. I see about 20 a day here, and only the same 3 S-series Saturns. I just think...

Wrench Re: 200,000 Mile Club - With Photo

Clutch kit = $115
Reseal intake manifold = $5
Swap air box for homemade K&N setup = $35
Repair broken MAF wiring = $0.25 (a strip of electrical tape)
Replace catalytic converter (still works...

Re: 200,000 Mile Club - With Photo

You were talking about the 2.5/3.5 Altima, not the originals with the KA24DE (Nissan's most reliable engine). Only major malfunction they had was a weak intake manifold gasket, nothing a little RTV...

Dizzy Re: 200,000 Mile Club - With Photo

As another poster has already noted by now, I said it's my sister's car.

She's never bought one with over 100k on it and asses around town all day, putting about 1k/week on them.

With her...

Re: 200,000 Mile Club - With Photo

:whoa::eek: 800k on a Saturn?! I didn't even think that would be possible with all their oil issues.

Who said anything about a car payment? I paid $305 (not a typo) for that Altima in '03 and...

Re: 01 Saturn fuel issues

I'm not really very familiar with the SOHC engines, but since you said that the problem started after it inhaled water, I would check the throttle position sensor, manifold pressure sensor, air...

Re: Rocker Arm Fell Off!

Many times actually. Those roller rockers on the Gen3s love to slip sideways and hop out. Nothing you can really do to prevent it. Just another one of the 20 or so common Saturn issues.

Idea Re: Noob mechanic with lots of issues on 96 SC2

I'm not really a Saturn expert, but on most other cars a 420 is a clogged cat. It will cause EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM you described.

You engine feels restricted above 3k RPM because it is. The exhaust...

Cool Re: 200,000 Mile Club - With Photo

I find this tread mildly amusing. :D So many people amazed that their cars lasted to 200k.

Personally, I don't drive Saturns. (I've seen my sister kill far too many of them.) I don't find 200k to...

Checkered Flag Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor Question

If your VSS has a broke wire, your speedometer wouldn't work at all. Your lead foot is causing the tickets, not your little plastic car.

Idea Re: What is this noise? pic and link to noise inside

Kinda sounds like the beginnings of your upper mount starting to go. Hasn't gotten to the point where it makes the loud -THUMP-, but it seems like the rubber is torn.

How about using that iPhone...

Re: Peanutbutter in the Coolant overflow - DOHC '94 SL2

Forgot to mention that to replace the rear main seal (if needed) you would need to remove the engine and separate it from the transmission. Rear main seal is behind the flywheel/flex-plate.

Of...
