Re: Spark Plug Wires Firing Order

Yes, which is why it may run fine with certain wires switched.

You'll sometimes see it referred to as DIS (distributor-less ignition system) and waste-spark is a variation of DIS. It'll fire...

Re: Spark Plug Wires Firing Order

Wires in the engine are 1-2-3-4

Connect to coil packs in 4-1-2-3

Read this post - particularly #8. Pretty sure if you have numbers written on coilpacks, someone added them. I haven't looked...

Re: Annual Angst

Michigan has the highest insurance rates in the nation, last I checked.

I've paid more to insure my Saturns than I paid to buy and maintain them :)
(and I just carry the most basic insurance,...

Re: Starter & EGR brackets

I don't know anything about 1st gen EGRs, but the later ones, EGR cleaning is part of my routine maintenance. I try and clean it out every year or two.

Dunno if it will work for your wife, but the two things that work for mine:

1) I really like this car. Maybe there is a sentimental reason ("it's the car I was driving when I met you, sweetie: ...

Re: What is the foam seal on the fresh air intake on the cowl?

Part # 21031308 (screen, air inlet) - #3 in picture at link below

Probably NLA - most people will lift one off a junkyard car, or make their own for a couple bucks in parts (foam, screen, cut and...

Re: Rebuilding 96 dohc

You'll have to do a search but I think DIYguy cleaned his while they were out of the engine, using household ammonia. May have left it out in the sun to heat up.

Somebody else (cboss? ehunter?)...

Re: Steel/zinc bolts and nuts OK for exhaust?

Thanks for the ideas. Never would have thought of aircraft suppliers or marine suppliers.

Which is weird because I'm pretty sure somebody mentioned getting a cable boot at a boat supply place...

Re: What causes ignition retardation?

I think people have mentioned a loose heat shield as rattling and being picked up as knock but it was never tested nor proven.

Carbon build up causing knock?

Engine temps normal during cruise...

Thread summary:

I still cant get a clear sense if this is an fuel or spark issue.

Unknowns / not tried (with comments in italics):

1) Actual fuel pressure. Dad checked, presumed good....

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

I went back over the thread and have some suggestions. I noticed a lot of mentions of it starting after the battery is warmed (with a warmer or after recharging). A bit odd.

But if there is poor...

Re: Dead starter, but is it really the starter?

I'm glad it wasn't the starter - I'd feel bad recommending a part/brand that failed you :)

I should keep a piece of cardboard or 1/4" plywood in the trunk, for getting under the car.

I use a...

Re: Steel/zinc bolts and nuts OK for exhaust?

I couldn't find any specifications other than what was on the packages (and which I posted above). The nuts were on the next rack over, which did not have a "stainless steel" tag above the panel...

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

Maybe take your cousin?

I know that a junkyard is not the most appealing sounding place, but it really doesn't involve a lot of digging around. You'd probably be in and out in 10 minutes or...

Re: Attention northerners....Winter wiper blade reccomendation?

RainX bottles seems to work OK for rain on exteriors of windows, for the first year. Doesn't really help with internal icing of moisture we sometimes get in the really cold days.

With the second...

Re: Well darn, my '99 SL2 laps oil like a BMW

Correct, from what I have read - no gasket originally. But apparently, removing the cam cover was a real PITA because of the RTV - involving razors, prying, hoping nothing cracks, and cussing.

Re: Steel/zinc bolts and nuts OK for exhaust?

Thanks for all the replies.

It took me longer than expected yesterday to cut off the old nuts and bolts (was working with a Dremel, laying on my back under the car.). Plus, I had a false start....
