Re: Cylinder Head Removal - DOHC

When you use the timing marks on pulleys and chain, the exact cam position doesn't matter; there is no problem if the cams move a bit due to spring loads or slack in the chain. And, "slack" is...

Re: Cylinder Head Removal - DOHC

The cylinder walls and rings will probably be in OK shape, although the oil rings are probably still stuck a bit. The oil ring problem ensures the rest up in the cylinder is "well-lubed" and doesn't...

Re: Cylinder Head Removal - DOHC

My suggestions:

Remove the head with manifolds in place, but install it with manifolds off.

Agreed, access to that timing cover with the engine in the car is miserable, but I would still do...

Re: 98 SL 2 I'm interested in buying. I have questions and concerns.

"This isn't making sense to me. If this cat was replaced in 2010 and has 32k on it... How has it already gone bad and needs to be replaced?"

There are two faults in your logic:

1) P0420 does...

Re: 1995 sl1 automatic, computer problem?

It is a trivial job to R & R the PCM, and one tested and programmed to your exact needs is $150. If you are just going to throw a PCM at it, do it yourself and keep the cost down to that $150.

Re: Engine retarding ignition - part 2.

Does your live-data indicate "knock detected" or "knock retard" values? Just changing the knock sensor isn't enough to ensure that whole circuit is OK or that something else isn't being detected as...

Re: SL1 Oil Leak Question

They all can suffer from oil getting past the oil-control rings and "burning" with no apparent effects; no fouled plugs or visible smoke, will pass smog test fine.

Another possibility is a problem...

Re: Parts availability

I would like to see the whole part/assembly, but am confident that can be fixed. I will try for free if you are willing to risk losing it totally if I fail.

I will PM you with my email, since...

Re: Parts pt2

Which gear, the pinion or the sector? Post a picture of the assembly. I have made gears, piston rings, con-rod bearings, and many other such parts when they become hard to find. I would be willing...

Re: Parts pt2

RG, what part of your existing one is bad? Maybe we can come up with a way to repair it.

Re: Saturn contest

Too bad the moderator(s) of this site don't seem to care. It isn't that hard to block obvious spam like we have been getting recently.

Re: Sl1 brake help

OK, it never has stopped as well as you would like, but is this new?

"Goes nearly to the floor before stopping"

I agree with others, there should be no plastic or aluminum brake lines, and...

Re: Sl1 brake help

Can I assume this is a new problem, the brakes were fine during the previous 347K (miles, kilometers?)? Got ABS?

That MC with only two lines going in it sounds odd, post a picture.

You can...

Re: 2000 SL2 spark at coils, not at plugs

Have you already bought the new plugs and wires, can't return them?

If not, then check for spark again, having both plugs grounded. If spark is OK, save that money for what is really wrong and...

Re: 2000 SL2 spark at coils, not at plugs

How are you testing for spark at the plugs? Not by laying them on the plastic valve-cover, I hope? Also both terminals to a particular coil have to have a ground path, you cannot test only one...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Did you push down hard on the chain, did you rock the engine back-and-forth to try maximizing any slack at that top point (the valve springs will often try to move the cams and take up slack right...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Those chains are not a "maintenance" item that needs to be replaced periodically, and they are not that much fun to change. It should last until the engine needs to be opened up for some other...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

"I would think the chain would get looser with temperature."

No, the aluminum block and head have a greater thermal expansion rate than the steel chain. The center-to-center distance between...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

Re: Transmission Question - Racing

The TAAT shift solenoids can be disconnected from the PCM and manually switched to force any gear or TC lock condition you want. There are "combinations" of the solenoids that need to be energized,...

Re: Unknown engine noise when cold

I can't really hear anything in that video, but my guess is an exhaust leak or looseness in an exhaust component that tightens up as the exhaust gets hot. Worst case is a crack in the manifold.

Re: Cylinder 3 misfire & Fuel in Oil

Agreed, I doubt that bit of gasket caused the bad valve/compression. Also agreed, be sure to grab the "Z shaped" hose and PCV valve that goes from the aluminum VC to intake manifold. It, too, is a...

Attached is the thumbnail of the OP's flex pipe with a hole in it. The OP would like opinions on whether that hole can be repaired enough to pass smog test.

If you...

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

It is certainly possible that the original failed, then you got two new bad ones from different sources, but kind of unlikely. I suspect this more of a wiring or ICM problem, not the CKP sensor...

Re: Cylinder 3 misfire & Fuel in Oil

Those plastic VCs warp and leak even if you use a torque wrench.

When you take the head off, I would pull the cams and such off first. Just be sure to organize the parts as removed so you know...
