You cannot just plug a USB cable from a laptop to an OBD2 port.

Not true, Carplugs.com is cheaper, scantool does not including shipping and the Scan XL is an option that you have add-on.

I like a PC based OBD2 Tester.

It's upgradeable and you can use different software on it.

I just purchased this Obdii scan tool (http://www.carplugs.com/obd2bluetooth.html) and volia I can read my codes and sensors in the driveway and the computer is inside the garage.
