You may have a faulty or failing flasher relay. On the L series the relay module is also the hazard switch situated on your dashboard. They are like $20.00+/-. It's a plug & play.

I would suspect the cheapest way to get it running again is a used engine, that you know the history...

It should be. They both have the same transmission I believe. So the solenoids are all going to be in the side of the tranny underneath where the battery lives.
