Re: '97 SL2 won't shift

I found some tools and took a look, and you're absolutely right. I don't know all the terminology, but whatever the shifter attaches to has simply broken clean apart. Not as serious of a problem as I...

Re: '97 SL2 won't shift

I could check that, but I can feel the shifter has zero resistance. It can flop around forward and backward between third and fourth gears, but I can't move it sideways to any other gear. All my...

'97 SL2 won't shift

I backed my manual '97 SL2 into a driveway today to turn around. The gears made a loud grinding sound when I put it in reverse and then the shifter flopped about uselessly - I can't shift at all.

Re: Buzzing relay

New battery, new starter, everything is good as new.

The reason the diagnosis was confusing was because I was assuming only one thing broke - either the battery or the starter. It was both.

Re: Buzzing relay

Things are looking up. I put in the new starter and the car starts now, but only when I jump it. Pep Boys tested the old starter and it was dead - it wouldn't do anything but make a loud click when...

Re: Buzzing relay

You're right, of course, as usual. My problem is that I'm also taking advice from my father-in-law, who is also is usually right (about cars), and he insists it's simply the starter. Since I get a...

Re: Buzzing relay

I'm replacing the starter.

It made a series of steady knocking sounds when I jumped it, then it went "click" and stopped. It's locked up. It's a Bosch with a lifetime warranty, so I'll get it...

Re: Buzzing relay

I cleaned the battery connections, and things are better still. The lights still flicker a bit, but when I try to start the car I get a firm clicking sound. Once it even clicked a couple times.

Re: Buzzing relay

Don't answer - I got the bolts out. I had to be vigorous, in fact, rather than gentle, but they came out. Thank you, and I'll keep you posted about how the cleaning goes.

Re: Buzzing relay

Thanks for ruling out the starter. I would have wasted a lot of effort replacing it.

I'm going to do as you say and clean all the connections thoroughly. You lost me when you started talking about...

Re: Buzzing relay

Let me describe the problem more fully.

When I turn the key to the on position, the dash lights flicker. In this video you can see that when I turn the key, the lights flicker and in the...

Buzzing relay

When I turn the key to the on position on my '95 SL2, the relay in the fuse box under the hood that is closest to the back of the car buzzes randomly. Observe:

Exhaust pipe hitting frame

My wife's 95 SC2 got rear-ended, and since then the exhaust pipe has been rattling against the frame of the car, where it goes around a bend right before reaching the muffler. The car looks perfect -...

Re: Smoke from exhaust after extended engine braking

Braking down mountains soon makes the pads so hot you can smell them. A pad that is saturated by heat loses its ability to brake. I was under the impression that it's better to use the engine and...

Smoke from exhaust after extended engine braking

In order to spare my brake pads, I was in fourth gear most of the way down 6 miles of mountain at a 6% grade in Utah. When things started leveling out, I shifted to fifth. As I took my foot off the...

Re: Any s-series headlight fixtures near Phoenix?

Just wanted to follow up and say that I found a pic and pull on Craigslist thirty minutes from where I was in Arizona. The headlight assembly cost $20 and I had the car fixed up in no time.

Thanks...

Any s-series headlight fixtures near Phoenix?

My 97 SL2 and I are thousands of miles from home near Phoenix, Arizona. Somebody backed into my passenger side headlight and it shattered into a million pieces.

Does anyone have ideas about where...

Re: Brakes creak when slowing to a stop

I may be on the wrong track calling this a brake problem.

The aforementioned knowledgeable car guy pointed out that it may well be clutch related, perhaps the throw-out bearing. My car has 180,000...

Re: Brakes creak when slowing to a stop

I bedded them in. Anyway, they only started vibrating recently. Everything has been fine until the past week or so.

I asked another knowledgeable car guy and he said not to worry about the...

Brakes creak when slowing to a stop

I put new front pads and rotors on my 97 SL2 last November. Recently they have started making a creaking sound as I slow to a stop. It's not the squealing sound of a wear indicator. It's not really a...

Re: Completely hypothetical AC question

I think you misunderstood how completely foolish the person in this story is. There was no leak. The AC was perfect. Disconnecting the hose from a pressurized system was a totally random stupid...

Re: Completely hypothetical AC question

The fitting was released for 10 seconds at most before it was tightened again. The AC system was not touched for a week or two after this for fear of damaging the compressor from a low oil level....

Re: Completely hypothetical AC question

I almost follow what you're saying. Almost. :)

Here's my question. You make it sound like the system is simply low on refrigerant. Why does the process of adding more need to be different than the...

Re: Completely hypothetical AC question

Even a dunderhead wouldn't be so foolish as to try such a trick while the car was running. Fortunately.

In our story, the AC system still has pressure. The compressor clutch engages. ...

Completely hypothetical AC question

I cannot overemphasize how extremely hypothetical this question is.

Let's say you have a completely working AC system in your car, and some dunderhead decides to unbolt the high pressure AC line....
