Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

Are you desperate enough yet to get compression readings?

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

OP, did you notice that I referred o a possible problem with the CKP sensor signal/circuit, not the sensor alone? The entire system, including wires and connectors, has to be suspected; not just the...

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

If the starting fluid didn't help, then it is unlikely this is a fueling problem; not the fuel pump or its relay, not the injectors. The next easiest thing to check, when it cranks but won't fire, is...

Re: Need screw in fitting for water heater hose, dr. side

Got it out, can you post a picture? I'm guessing it is NPT and you can get a suitable one from even Lowes or Home Depot. At your FLAPS, Dorman is a common brand, look on the Dorman web-site for a...

Re: New SC2

Worst case on the PCM is $150, that will get you a "rebuilt" one programmed for any stock config that you need. You don't even need to send the core back.

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

When you had the "crank but no fire" episode yesterday, did you try starting-fluid? That is a quick/cheap/easy/one-person test that can not only confirm that it is a fueling problem, but get you...

Re: Weak Spark

I did not drop the pan, but do be sure to remove the screws that fasten the pan to the timing cover!

Re: Weak Spark

It is a gamble.

I did just what you are contemplating many years/miles ago on a '95 DOHC. I replaced just the one valve, ground all, and put it back together using just a "valve grind" gasket...

Re: Slow coolant leak turned major!

It has been hours now since your post, I hope you are off the road by now.

Yes, fluids under pressure can spray all over, in unpredictable patterns.

Did you loosen/remove the reservoir cap to...

Does the horn work? If not, another suspect is the clock-spring.

Re: Battery Dead. Jumped car and it died while driving

The alt could be damaged, but hopefully not. That is the function of that fusible-link wire, to protect against current beyond what the alt is designed for.

Re: Battery Dead. Jumped car and it died while driving

^^^ +1

Once the engine fired, the alt tried to feed the starter through that wire; almost a direct short to ground because of the very large current draw of a starter.

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

Let's hope that it is cured now, but if the problem persists you should consider having a "mobile" tech come to where it is dead. You can verify it won't start right in front of them, and they can...

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

I went through a PCM failure episode, the symptoms were very flaky but the initial and most obvious symptom was an intermittent "crank but no start". Sound familiar?

Check the 5V power at the MAP...

Still no compression readings? You are wandering in the weeds, strewing money in your path.

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

Backfiring into the intake is unusual, with-or-without starting fluid. It kind of hints of a valve sealing or timing problem. I would still like to see compression readings.

Re: Fuel pump fuse has no power to it.

Got spark while cranking? How about injector pulses? The absence of either those suggests a bad CKP sensor circuit, as does the lack of fuel-pump operation.

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

Backfired out the intake? Let's go back to the beginning and check compression.

Re: 1998 Saturn SL2 won't start when parked on driveway incline

What does "good" mean for fuel pressure; was it checked with a gauge (post readings)? Any other kind of test for FP is inconclusive. (The exception is if there is no fuel pressure, don't need a...

Re: Injector o-ring size

The stock ones should be Viton, or similar, about the best you can get for this application. (Polysufide may be more fuel resistant, but probably poorer for heat). So... as others said earlier this...

Re: P0340 code

I'm thinking it is the wire for the CMP signal, not exactly related to either #1 or 4. Yes, the #1-4 coil ciruit generates that signal in the ICM, but you have already swapped ICM and coils around. ...

Re: P0340 code

I would expect an intermittent open in the wiring more than a short. Sure, wiring/connector problems are always a possibility, that is why parts-swapping may not be successful. Intermittent can be...

Exhaust leaks

OldNuc has mentioned, many times, how important it is to eliminate exhaust leaks when trying to pass smog testing. Here is a recent example of how crucial that can be:

I took my '95 SL2 (CA...

Re: Which rebuild kit to get SC2

I don't know if it would be more economical than that $463, but crank surfaces can be welded and ground for repair.
