Re: My Repair History vs. Everyone

And since I made the original post, I also did the belt tensioner again, water pump and serp belt. Just after the 150k, the headgasket also began leaking a lot externally, which resulted in needing a...

Re: Headgasket Leak?

Yes, I did use the liquid aluminum product. It definitely worked for me, as it has been almost 1000 miles and the coolant level has not moved at all.

Re: Headgasket Leak?

Thanks.

How can I tell the difference between a headgasket leak and a hole in the Block in this case?

Headgasket Leak?

Hey guys,

So I have been trying to chase down a coolant leak on my '96 SL2 for quite some time. Lately, the leak has become large enough that it goes through a pint of coolant every other week.

Re: Front end clunk going over bumps question.

Check the bushings for cracks and pry against the LCA ball joints with the car lifted. If there is play, then they will need to be replaced.

However, clunks over bumps are usually caused by bad...

Re: LOUD buzzing from engine compartment

I already replaced the serpentine belt and serpentine belt tensioner 2,000 miles ago with a Gates belt (778) and Gates tensioner. It did not solve the problem.

Re: LOUD buzzing from engine compartment

All mounts are now OK and the noise is still there.

It sounds like a very loud rattle coming from the power steering pump. Has anyone seen this type of failure from a p/s pump?

Re: LOUD buzzing from engine compartment

Just an update...

Finally got around to looking at the problem. The rubber insert inside of the dogbone has literally "fallen out." By that, I mean the rubber insert sticks out about 1/2" from the...

Re: A/C Troubleshooting

I posted readings at both idle and at 2000 rpm.

Ambient temperature was ~55F. At 2000 rpm, the low pressure was showing about 24 psi and the high pressure was about 135 psi.

I drove the car...

Re: A/C Troubleshooting

Disclosure: Since I thought I had too much refrigerant, I held down the schraeder valve several days ago for about 5-10 seconds and let a bunch out.

After letting some refrigerant out, I took...

Re: Longer Engine Crank When Cold

Throttle body has been cleaned.

Could it be an issue of fuel pressure, perhaps insufficient fuel pressure?

Re: LOUD buzzing from engine compartment

Funny that you mention that. The noise is most concentrated around the power steering pump area. And lock-to-lock steering in Park will produce the noise ever so slightly. Plus, the pump area has...

Re: LOUD buzzing from engine compartment

I didn't believe it at first either, but the tech said the rubber was sticking out and that would answer why I had so much difficulty with reinstalling the dogbone.

yes, the dogbone is still...

Longer Engine Crank When Cold

'96 SL2 w/148k.

Engine takes longer time to crank when it's a cold start. For me, a cold start is 60F. :D It usually cranks for several seconds before starting.

When it is hot, the car starts...

A/C Troubleshooting

During hot weather (90F+), my A/C has begun to rapidly engage/disengage every few seconds. I suspect this is due to a system overcharge that is exacerbated by high ambient temperatures, as the system...

Dayco makes a flat spring type tensioner and "W" style belt for older vehicles. Has anyone had good...

Re: 15mpg in 96 SL2

Re: 15mpg in 96 SL2

No driveability issues though. Fuel filter is going to be due in about 2k.

I do suspect that at one point, I got a bad tank of gas from somewhere. Could this has caused some permanent damage?
