Re: The Best Power Steering Fluid

Have used Valvoline PS for years using baster method to clear out old fluid. Try to do this about once a year.

Guilty Repairs

After trying several methods to reattach my floppy driver's side door skin (broken tabs), I relented to do unholy repair with some silicone adhesive with Gorilla tape holding everything in place....

350,000 and Counting

Rolled over the 350,000 mark this weekend... . Got nearly 38mpg with mostly highway driving, which I think is pretty decent considering wear and tear on unit. Celebrated with another oil change!

Re: Flaky Rotor

Amazingly normal. Might have been some additional wear due to the rough surface, but otherwise no defect on the pad side to speak of.

It looks like the metal started to delaminate, prob due to...

Flaky Rotor

Wondering if anyone else has seen this before (I hadn't). Less than two years on current brake job, noticed stopping power had fallen off. Checked one wheel, noticed good amount of pad left -...

Trim Repair

Some nimrod backed into the grille of my SL, breaking the black insert that sits between bumper and bottom of front fascia. Have it temporarily located with black zip tie, which is probably...

Re: Pimpin' the SL

The stuff they used gave it an almost "wet" look - very slick and glossy looking. Wonder if it was some king of silicone spray.

Whatever it was, it really made the plastic inner fenders stand out.

Pimpin' the SL

My Saturn dealer (Southfield, MI) would deliver new Saturns with some type of detailing product that made the plastic inner fender liners, slick, smooth and shiny... .

Going to celebrate 350,000...

Re: Age and Mileage (MPG)

Great feedback! Much appreciated.

Compression check would be interesting - might not like the results I see, however. Will research cost of injectors to see if it makes sense to pick up a couple...

Age and Mileage (MPG)

My '02 SL had gotten pretty decent mileage (MPG) for most of its life (37-39 MPG Summer and 35 mpg Winter). Very consistent, very predictable based on how I drove.

With higher mileage (now...

Re: Life span of water pump.......?

Can guarantee new part will not last as long as the OE one... . Having said that, got 240,000 from original one, and now another 100,000 on the NAPA replacement.

Like to get Delco/GM replacements...

Re: Oil drain plug gasket

Fumoto drain valves are around $25, if I remember correctly. They insert like a regular drain plug, but have a spring loaded lever which turns a ball valve. Have installed on multiple vehicles...

Re: S-Series Mileage Milestones 100k 150k 200k 250k and beyond

THIRD OF A MILLION MILES! It took 17 years, but finally reached the big third of million mile milestone last week. Like many of you folks, it's amazing what I haven't had to replace/repair after all...

Re: Oil drain plug gasket

That's the beauty of installing a Fumoto valve - haven't needed a new drainplug gasket for over 300,000 miles.

Re: No Code High Idle (and EGR question)

Appreciate confirmation on EGR function. The first time it came off it was caked up with carbon and didn't move much (and subsequently replaced).

AZ swapped old parts for new - is it just me or...

No Code High Idle (and EGR question)

Trying to chase down a recent high idle issue on '02 SL, started by looking at all the usual culprits, namely IAC and TPS (replaced 11/18). Not to my surprise, they both looked surprisingly...

Re: Aftermarket radios?

Installed a decent, hand me down Alpine head unit in my '02 Saturn, ended up using existing wiring and speakers without any issues. I will say that the USB charging port in radio seems to charge...

Re: Smooth SL

Not sure if photos do the end result justice, but here you go. The real difference is the feel of the panel compared to what I started with. Missed a small section where hood creases form and the...

Re: Nifty Shifty

This latest repair highlighted what a little effort can do to make a nearly undriveable Saturn into running shape. Thought I had some major tranny linkage issue, was on verge of parking it. $8 in...

Re: Nifty Shifty

Contacted lubricant maker CRC to see what shifter cable lube recommendations they had... . Primary suggestion was silicone spray, not the dry lube with Teflon I actually used. Silicone flows well,...

Re: How to tell that you own a Saturn S

You can pull your key out of the ignition switch with zero effort.

The passenger side of your front chassis is rust free.

Your Saturn laughs at shopping carts.

NO RUST! (at least visible...

Nifty Shifty

Experiencing a case of shifter arthritis in my '02 SL 5spd. Reading previous posts has lead me to do the normal stuff - examine cables (good), clean (done) and lube with a "dry" spray with teflon....
