Rescue mission with JY valve body?

I flew 2000 miles to help out a dear friend with an 2002 SL1 in bad shape. It had what sounded like a bad VB on the phone, and the final straw was the starter failing - luckily in her garage! I...

Re: Starter rebuild for early S-series Saturns

I've installed a few DB Electric starters in heavier equipment. No complaints at all. They did what they were supposed to and still do.

It's always good to learn new things though.

Re: Emergency help!!!! Trans problems

Use a torque wrench on any VB bolts! Use 1/4" drive in INCH-lbs. I think the torque is around 96 INCH lbs, aka 8 ft lbs, but a ft lb torque wrench won't be accurate at that low number and might...

Re: '99 SL2 scary bad knock

I just thought of something. When I bought this car with a known bad engine, the valve cover had been removed and was missing a bolt. The guy said that they took it off to check if the knock was in...

Re: '99 SL2 scary bad knock

That makes sense. I don't know if I can check the lower end without removing the engine. Can the pan be removed without the subframe out? If I can do that, I can do it in the yard. Otherwise...

Re: '99 SL2 scary bad knock

I looked again at the cylinder heads and cam covers. The cover on the 99 is definitely narrower and has a different bolt arrangement than the 97. It's about an inch narrower over the cams and 1.5...

Re: '99 SL2 scary bad knock

Thanks. The exhaust manifold is different - the O2 sensor is sideways instead of pointing to the radiator. Tomorrow when it's light, I'll pull the '97 up parallel and see what I can see. The '97...

Re: '99 SL2 scary bad knock

I listened to this engine run for all of 10 seconds and it sure sounds like the crank is toast. I could be wrong, but that knock was so hard and loud that I'm lucky that the block's still intact. I...

Re: '99 SL2 scary bad knock

Thanks! I may rebuild it in my "spare" time(LOL)! For now, I'd like to get it running well. If I use a gen 2 engine(96-98), I suppose I have to change the computer too, and that means finding one...

'99 SL2 scary bad knock

I just bought a '99 SL2 with a really bad knock. I knew it was bad when I bought it and got it for parts. The body is really nice though, so I'm thinking of fixing it. It seems it would cost more...

Re: Super clean 1st gen (not affiliated)

The Saturn TAAT automatic transmission is one of the few that can be flat towed without supplemental lubrication. I've towed many of them thousands of miles with no problems, mostly on freeways. ...

Re: Don't you hate aluminum wheels?

I've never had an aluminum wheel glue itself to a brake drum and hub with rust! I've had several steel wheels that did that and had to be removed with 15 minutes of whacking on with a sledge hammer....

Re: How can 2019 cars be as good as my SW2?

There's no good reason for having no bench seat option, and there's no good reason for that bench seat being unable to fold truly flat into a bedlike space. If it was a half and half bench seat, the...

Re: How can 2019 cars be as good as my SW2?

]

Saturn did many things right on the S, including putting plastic where it would otherwise turn to rust. I personally don't like the standardized interior on modern cars - they're very...

Re: How can 2019 cars be as good as my SW2?

Interesting feedback. How is it for maintenance? Assuming DIY, is there anything that's more difficult or takes longer than the S series?

Re: How can 2019 cars be as good as my SW2?

I find no advantage whatsoever with newer cars. Modern cars just have more plastic and electronics with little additional utility. The Saturn S series is as reliable as it gets. I've been...

Re: Can it be timing belt if it has starting problem?

I've always considered that the clutch "safety switch" is anything but. On older cars, or those where I've jumpered or removed it, if the car needs moving and I can't push it, like going uphill, I...

Re: 1996 SL2 automatic shifting bad -need new solenoid?

The best filter is a Wix or Napa Gold. Beware that Napa sells another filter for $2.00 less than the Wix one. Line pressure in the TAAT is more than twice a normal engine oil pressure and the...

Re: help! 02 SC2 suddenly blowing trans filter gasket!

This reminds me of a torque converter on a Dodge slant six that literally blew its welds in the middle of the outback of eastern Oregon. By sheer luck, I had a few gallons of tranny fluid in the...

Re: help! 02 SC2 suddenly blowing trans filter gasket!

Thank you for this info! After checking my solenoids carefully and replacing the LP one, this indicates that the actual VB could be in trouble. I'll change an entire unit and see if it works better.

Re: computer issue or?

Definitely true that the electrics and charging system have to be right.

If the car is hot and intermittent engine stops happen - then it restarts after ten minutes or so, I'd suspect the...

Re: Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid replacement (99 SL1 A/T)

Thanks for the info. I just used the third gear solenoid from the spare when I put it back together(before your post) and it's still harsh. I suppose it could just be another bad solenoid(it sat...

Re: Got a new 97 SL2. Alarm question.

I just got a '99 SL2 with some kind of alarm and a bad engine. I'd much rather have a bad alarm and decent engine. Either way, the alarm has to go - I can't stand the things, and the fobs. Just...

Re: Valve Body Issues (I've searched)

Thanks very much for your feedback. I'm up against a similar problem and considering buying a rebuilt VB. I'm not sure what goes wrong inside them other than the solenoids, but it would be a cheap...
