Any chance those extra timing marks on the cams are throwing you off? (Assuming that the cam pulleys in this vehicle have the same double set of timing marks the Saturn Vue 3.0 has)

I would still lean towards CPS despite your initial testing ...... take note of the rpm guage durring cranking when the vehicle is working and see if it is the same when/if it fails to restart after...

I picked up a tech2 off Ebay several years ago, I have since picked up additional software cards for Saab and the Saturn Astra. Thus far I have only used it as a diagnostic tool, key fob programming...

I replaced a BCM in my 2002 Vue with a used one and it worked perfectly with the exception of the 30 min passlock relearn and 5 minute key fob programming using my tech 2.

I would just remove the driveshaft. if you decide to remove the rdm and half shafts no additional parts are required

IF you have a 3.0 V6 engine this is a common symptom of a failing CPS (crank position sensor) located near the oil filter canister.

I find the actuall switch speed switch is often the problem,I havve repaired several by cleaning and removing some slightly melted extra plastic around the switch contacts.

A bad crank position sensor (cps) is known to cause this intermittent engine shut down. Its located near the oil filter canister.
