Re: Interesting oil related article and data

BITOG is good to have around, but at times the actual data is still lacking while people argue over what works. :dizzy:

As for the OLM's, UOA's and whatever we do have to use, I agree that a big...

Re: Interesting oil related article and data

Though I've never set up my mileage and expense spreadsheets for total costs, our operating cost on our '95 has been fairly low as well. And the data on oil use, etc would be great with regards to...

Re: Interesting oil related article and data

Fdryer,

I'm more or less disregarding the opinion of the article, but focused on the data that it presents. And more importantly, the data that could be available if they chose to make it public....

Interesting oil related article and data

https://jalopnik.com/why-expensive-oil-is-a-waste-of-money-1797241527/amp

With all the data an analysis place like Blackstone has, they probably have a market to sell that data or make it...

Re: I am running out of gasoline

For both grades and brands of fuel, experiment yourself and figure out where you get the best bang for the buck in MPG and/or how the car runs. Similar to Fetchfido I have local brands that always...

Re: 95 with a copper/orange color?

The dealer we picked up our new '95 from had one of those burnt orange cars. I remember them mentioning that it wasn't a normal factory color, but I think they mentioned something about a special...

Re: Chevron Delo 15W-30...

I've never seen the 15-30 in this area that I recall. I see the Delo HD 10-30 and the 5-40 versions all the time.

With the summer we have had lately (I live near Mattwithcats) using a 15-30...

Re: So long and thanks for all the fish........

I remember what was probably only the 3rd or 4th time I saw a CBX in the wild. We were up hiking at Joshua Tree National Monument, came back to the parking area and there it was. And it had the...

Re: So long and thanks for all the fish........

Well no S Series is ever going to be a Camaro, so we can't blame you for that decision.

You've without doubt given much back to the forums, and the in depth information you've provided on...

Re: The end is near

If I was closer I might snag that, but it's a long drive back to Virginia. But unless the car is trash, a very fair price IMO. Out this way nobody gives them away really cheap any more.

Re: Tire info

Keep in mind you have size options for the stock rims. Going to 185/65 often opens up a lot more choices, and is close enough to stock height to not mess with the speedo. You can also go 185/70 as...

Re: Replace 95 SL1 PCM with 96 PCM

Though I'm also of the "why" crowd, it seems like you have your reasons and want to do the project. With the above considered, it's probably something that can be done. Where there is a will, there...

Re: Historical Vehicles? The future of the S-Series

I'd have a couple more years before I could register my '96 with an antique vehicle tag here in Virginia, but it really wouldn't be legal as a daily driver. The restrictions on mileage and...

Re: Finding a decent Saturn is getting harder . It's seems

Add low miles on that, and for cheap. I always thought the yellow SC's were probably the best looking S Series cars.

Around here finding a decent S Series seems to be getting harder and...

Re: Head shave timing retarding a myth?

Seems fairly close to expected. Just shy of 19 degrees at the crank when moving the cams 1 tooth. No doubt quality of tools and equipment play a role, and it has to be much more precise than it...

Re: Most horrid sound ever!

The fact that nobody hears the noise from the outside might lead me to think that it's not as horrible as suspected, but rather a sound being transmitted through to the cab mostly. I was thinking...

Re: Head shave timing retarding a myth?

First let me fix the red above. Obviously the chain length stays the same. The cams rotate as the tensioner takes up the slack created, thus the timing change.

.... and back to the questions at...

Re: Head shave timing retarding a myth?

I've never taken any interest in the S Series numbers, but I haven't seen anything other than guesses to the numbers either.

To find out, you have to know the cam sprocket diameter.

Then...

Re: Whats your MPG?

That doesn't sound out of line. With the temps being up where they have been in much of the country, just staying alive in the car trumps MPG return. All highway isn't that terrible, but in stop...

Re: Greasing shifter...

That's what I've used. You could probably use the heavier stuff if you want since the area is protected from the worst dust and crap.

Re: Transmission Clunking Between Gears

From the two videos, I think you have a CV/driveline issue. In the one with all the shifting with the clutch in, I'm just hearing the usual mechanical noises of the shifter and shift tower, but no...

Re: Idle issues

The first thing I'd do is block the EGR, and check out the battery voltages both off and running (if you can get a decent idle running). Any leaks can wreak havoc on the idle, which in turn is...

Re: 2002 sl2 reservoir boils over at 1/2 way mark

In addition to confirming the above, check the line that dumps into the back of the coolant reservoir. They can get clogged and will often impact cooling. I'd suspect the cap more myself, but you...

Re: A new twist on an old favorite: Hesitation AFTER replacing ECTS

That photo is my '95 SL1 as it was delivered from the factory, and I can confirm nobody had swapped anything. It sounds like you either have sensors that have been swapped, or they were plugged in...

Re: Coolant leak by rear left tire???

That was my thought as well, especially if the OP uses a red coolant.

In any case, that's a long way for the coolant to run back down the car, so it shouldn't happen (at least quickly)...
