Re: My experience with Motor Oils and my Saturn

For the Saturn DOHC, I always had good results with Rotella T6. It's a full synthetic 5W-40 oil available at any Walmart for about $20/gallon. I also used it religiously on Audi A4 1.8T, A6 2.7T,...

Re: Oil pan drain plug seat... gasket?

A thin bead of RTV around the "flat" underside of the bolt head will also work in a pinch. You only need a couple of foot/lbs of torque on it to seal.

Re: 1999 SL1 rear brake line split - has the end come for the trusty Saturn?

You can buy standard steel brake lines of the appropriate size and bend it to shape. Any competent mechanic will be able to knock that out in no time and it shouldn't be very costly. You just need...

Re: New owner, basic upkeep question

Sounds like you have one with the VTi CVT transmission. Ticking time bomb is an understatement. When it fails (and it will), the car will be instantly worthless as the cost to repair will easily...

Re: light that indicates low coolant is coming on lately

Definitely don't bother with a used one. They are cheap and plentiful either online or at your local auto parts store. I'd probably get this one at Rockauto:

Re: 2000 Saturn SC2 coolant return line nipple broken on intake

No. You're likely to hose the engine. A tow is going to be significantly cheaper than dealing with a permanently damaged engine.

Re: light that indicates low coolant is coming on lately

Looks like it could be the infamous failing crimp on the plastic end tanks (solution is to replace the radiator). It could also be the trans cooling line connection pulling away from the end tank...

Re: Add oil instead of changing oil

I find it hard to muster the energy to be that concerned about anything over and above "good enough quality" for motor oil to be used in vehicles that are now worth less than a decent refrigerator.

Re: Add oil instead of changing oil

All the consumer grade mowers are disposable these days. After blowing through a pair of Deere riders that I got from Home Depot (the transmissions are the weak link and the frame is pretty flimsy),...

Re: Add oil instead of changing oil

If you're going to be at Walmart anyway, why not just use Rotella T6 synthetic? That always did a great job of keeping my Saturn 4-bangers sludge free, it's fantastic oil, and is usually only about...

Re: Fuel Line Leak, 95SC2 -- need parts / repair advice

That's awesome! I'd never heard of that product. A nice alternative to the traditional method.

Re: Paint on valve cover

Yep, that does look good. When I did mine, I got a small 3" paint roller from HomeDepot and lightly rolled on black paint on the letters without getting any drips on the sides to give the letters...

Re: Paint on valve cover

Any high temp engine paint (available in any auto parts store) will work fine. I'd just give it a good cleaning, then sand or wire brush any loose paint until you've got a smooth surface. Wipe down...

Re: Fuel Filter Bracket Bolts

That's exactly what I did the last time I changed one of these. No big deal so don't freak out when the originals snap.

Re: 2006 Saturn Vue 5 Sp V6, Auto Hunts?

My old 2006 sometimes would "shudder between 4th and 5th and couldn't decide if it wanted to lock-up or not. A couple of drain/refill cycles on the transmission with Honda fluid (used to be Z1 spec,...

Re: What is this grill with foam rubber?

No, it doesn't. The foam is just to keep pooling water from entering and the screen to keep debris from finding its way into the HVAC system.

Re: Saturn Craigslist Deal of the Day!

I suppose if your time isn't particularly valuable and you had space for a junk car while stripping the parts, and then willing to pay to deal with the resulting carcass, then sure....a great deal. ...

Re: Rotella T-6, 5w40 synthetic, less than $10/gallon at AutoZone

It occasionally goes on sale at Walmart which brings the price down to slightly above or below $20/gallon. That's usually when I buy a bit extra to tide me over until it is on sale again.

Re: Car wash in the winter, yay or nay

During the winter, any of my vehicles that have been exposed to salt on the roads get a trip to the touchless car wash on the first above freezing day that includes the undercarriage wash. That's...

This thread seems to have devolved into posting any old piece of crap rather than what would have been considered a "find".

Re: 02 SL2 5speed crazy whine

Mobil1's Synthetic "multi-vehicle" ATF has a cSt @ 100C of 7.4. That's what worked for me.
