Re: MPG Still BAD!

I've done my share of MPG chasing. If the car is running well, sensors appear to be working normally (ECTS, O2, IAT, etc), no SES light, no vacuum leaks or intake manifold gasket leaks, appropriate...

Re: 92 sc failed emission on hc

About the intake manifold gasket; IIRC, when you spray the brake cleaner and there is a leak, the engine will stumble, not smooth out. At least that's the case for fuel injected engines. My SL1 had a...

Re: Headlight Adjustment Problem

Other thought... maybe you just need to raise the little bumpers that align the hood. Still odd that correct aiming would cause interference with the hood.

Re: Headlight Adjustment Problem

I change my oil every 6 months in my Saturn. It drove 1100 miles between changes this past time and it was dark brown/black. Its oxidation and possibly contaminants in suspension. 6 months or 3000...

Re: Is there a way to gain height? 98 SC1

The car sits low, but not how you might think. It actually has as much ground clearance as any sedan. However, the seats sit low in the frame, which allows for a lower roof with the same headroom....

Re: What is your RPM at 55mph?

'95 SL1 automatic is something like 1900RPM at 55mph. My '06 Mazda 6i mtx is around 2500RPM.

Re: Suddenly capped at 4300rpm... but only when not in gear?

TO REITERATE:

Its a neutral rev-limiter, capped at approximately 4000RPM, to prevent damage to the powertrain.

Re: 22mpg

I've never really had good fuel economy in a city environment (35mph max, plenty of stop signs and a couple lights) on my sl1 with an automatic; low to mid 20's is very common. It'll pull low to mid...

Re: Normal gas mileage?

My '95 will get 36-39mpg and 90-100% highway, and its an automatic. A high idle on a warmed engine is indicating a problem.

Re: 91-95 Low beam headlights seem too dim. What is the best way to brighten them up?

Seriously, and I know this sounds like an arse response, but to get better lights you have to get a different car. The 1st gen headlamps are just too far behind in design to get much better....

Re: Airbag Powder--but NOT Airbag--Deployed During Theft Attempt

I'm a little late to the party, but that looks like fire extinguishing agent to me, ie. sodium bicarbonate.

Re: I want to do my brakes myself- I'm a brake noob- what to buy?

Cheap rotors and good pads, though I have Saturn OE rotors on the fronts and they've been doing okay. One thing I have been doing since I saw what the OE rotors looked like was to paint some...

Re: S-Series Tires - H speed required?

Speed ratings mean one thing, and one thing only; the ability to handle heat buildup from high speed driving. Often this means having to have a stronger, stiffer tire. Some of the benefits that you...

Re: Power Steering Pump Removal

Let me add one small but important point if you're replacing the power steering pump, is that many parts stores now only carry rebuilt pumps WITHOUT the reservoir. There are two clips that hold on...

Re: Alternator light: only on when car is not moving

Actually, they run quite well (dual magneto ignition). The problem is trying to tell anyone about it (dead battery = no avionics). Good thing Mr. Pratt & Mr. Whitney saw to it to have their...

Re: Alternator light: only on when car is not moving

Typical symptoms of an alternator on its way out. I've had a few do this in airplanes I've flown (you'd be surprised... FoMoCo alternators in aviation!). Eventually it wear to the point it will not...

Re: help with completed brake job - did I just waste $500?

I don't think true ceramic pads are available for anything other than exotic sports cars. Ceramic is a label for a wide variety of materials. If anything, the blend on the street cars is actually a...

Re: help with completed brake job - did I just waste $500?

Its the most often overlooked reason to why Saturns have an unusually low brake pedal, and its properly adjusting the rear drums! You have to back off the parking brake handle adjustment so that the...

Re: 40 mpg plus...Just say no to A/C & check odometer w/ GPS

There are a few things that can affect GPS accuracy, but generally speaking, its VERY accurate on speed, as long as the elevation is relatively flat. Put it this way, its so accurate, that with a...

Re: Talk me out of buying a new car

If I had your Saturn I would dump it and buy the 3. Personally, I dont have the time to do big fixes at home, and sending it to a tech makes it harder to justify fix rather than replace an older car....

Re: a car sleeping inside the winter

My parents cars have had minimal frame rust as they have been garaged (unheated) year round in Central NY. Maybe there is more rust than if snow/ice had not been allowed to melt, but overall keeping...

Re: A/C Not Working Well

Not sure how those IR thermometers are at measuring vent temps. A food thermometer (digital works great) inserted in the vent should read around 45F at that outside temp.

They'll check pressures,...

Re: Tim Horton's Double-Double on my Carpet!

Timmy Ho's in Ontario is like Dunkin Donuts in Massachusetts, they're more prolific than Starbucks, but everyone loves it. DD isn't near as good as TH; which is why I want to get to Western NY to...

Re: Astra MPG observed

I have over 14,000 miles on my Mazda. There hasn't been any noticeable change in fuel economy since new. People have said the 2.3L doesn't break-in until 10k. Maybe by oil analysis I'd see a leveling...

Re: 2009's rolling in

Closest competition in my mind the the Mazda 3s hatch. The only real benefit I see of the Astra, is its fuel economy. Its a smaller car, costs about the same when competitively equipped (within $1000...
