Removed valve cover. Chain had skipped one link. Reset chain. Engine sort of almost would run. Conclusion: bent valve(s)

Realize now I could have activated the tensioner by removing valve cover...

Did not torque the bolts holding the bearing but cinched them down well.

Thinking maybe some other issue like the "spring rubbers" mentioned.

The sound is a repetitive...

Took fdryer's recommendation and did the positive terminal disconnect. CEL gone. Got my car back.

Sounds dead on fdryer.

Now that you mention it the coil pack looked a little warped, also indicating effects of the 'cooking'.
