It might help to clean off oil from alternator and engine. Leaving a clean area should help when more oil leaks out and leaves a trail, marking where it came from.

I edited that drawing for simplicity to prevent making it difficult from actual inside dimensions used for offset measurement. Hopefully something is revealed as to this dilemma.

If you have a subscription or electronic copy of a service manual, a Tech II can help but there's more to a Tech II than just plugging it in. Advanced diagnostic skills don't come with scantools....

Brake shops know from experience and practice what to look for beyond the majority of diyers. Here's where second guessing may help.

It's always good to have service manual procedures. If a short cut can make it easier with your method then adapting from recommended procedures is even better. I'd call that a win-win solution.
