I know this post is late, but the last pic with the braided wire is a ground that bolts down the PCM, on the drivers side PCM mount.

first pic is of the canister purge solenoid. It bolts onto a bracket at the back of the engine block under the intake. Almost where the engine and trans matting surface is.

I recently was doing some trans work on a customers car. I found a message on the side cover dated before the car was built. It said " my first days" and had the date.

Glad you got it fixed. The sway bar bushings is the first thing to check with front end clunks on Ions. You may get some noise returning from the bushing brackets once the new bushings wear a bit....

The 3.0L V6 is pretty powerful for such a small size engine. They make very good lowend torque which does move the Lseries pretty well.

The coil assembly is the most common to fail. I dont know if orielly can test coils. cheapest thing to do would be to look for a used coil at the junkyard or find someone with a 2.2 GM car to borrow...
