Re: "oiling" the subframe to prevent rust?

I escaped the Salt Belt about 34 years ago. BUT if I lived there again, I would certainly oil every crack and cranny before each winter. To the extent of using a sprayer and wand to shoot rocker...

Re: What tires are everyone using?

(from a motorcycle forum- "black, round, and hold air") :)

I bought Michelins about 9 years ago. What a difference! BUT I don't drive enough any longer, to wear out the tires, before they...

Re: Piston soak revisited: Methods and observations

Thank you for posting your experiment.

I recently did a head gasket R&R. While the head was off, I cleaned the piston crowns. That stuff was baked on!

I used (gently) various scrapers, a...

Re: Mice

Not sure if "chicken wire" is correct description, it was wire screen with openings about 1/4 inch. I sort of wrapped it around the air snorkel opening.

Re: Mice

They loved my mom's 93 Ciera. Finally I put a fine chicken wire cover on the air intake. Same for my Saturn. In her Olds, they chewed through the injector wiring. I was told that they like the...

Re: Head fixed, new disaster

All right. Possible success :)

Installed new Mahle seal. All seems well. I was REALLY careful to insert the crank pulley in straight and gentle. It is odd that you install it flush with the...

Re: Good control arm brand

I bought some from RA, that have grease fittings, OK but the alignment was slightly off (I corrected in my garage later).

Re: Hazard fuse keeps blowing

A short somewhere, I had one in the starting circuit, a wiring loom that passes over the clutch pedal had a chafed wire. Look for wiring looms that are rubbing against something else.

Second...

Re: Head fixed, new disaster

OK, I've been putting this off, I need a really good day. :(

Another Q: I didn't R&R the oil pump, but I understand that there's a PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE in there somewhere.
I'm hoping that any...

Re: Tire Time coming- DIY?

My Suzuki 2-wheels speedometer is 10% fast! Which is common for Japanese 2-wheels.
GPS is a godsend. Better than mental math all day long :)

Re: AC Condenser fix (bent fins)

HF to the rescue once again!
Would a zip tie of appropriate width, poked through the gaps, work also? Just an idea. Zip tie has a tapered end.

Re: Saturn repIrs

Wow I'm jealous. If you can spend about 30% of its purchase price  the Haynes book worked well for me. And has wiring diagrams.

Re: Head fixed, new disaster

OK I bought seal as you recommended. /\

No oil coming from valve cover gasket, it was on front of engine. I checked VC gasket with mirror. It's the good bright blue one.

I will have local...

Re: Need a down pipe bracket

I used 2 SS wide hose clamps, still holding after 2+ years, but that /\ looks a little sturdier.

Re: Blown head gasket FIXED

OK for not using copper pipe :|

Old head gasket was black? I don't remember and deleted pix of it. :(

UPDATE:
changed oil after 95 miles on the rebuild. It was black as tar!
Also some oil...

Cylinder heads 1998+

So I just fixed a blown head gasket on my 1997 SL. Luckily, the head wasn't cracked, and it was flat :) I've owned it since new, never let temp gauge go past "halfway".

For future reference, I...

Head bolts

1997 SL

So I assembled the head etc. Followed the torque procedure (thanks OldNuc). All seems OK, she is back on the road!

Is there a re-torque for the (new) head bolts? Or am I done :)

Re: Trunk Rubber Liner For 2000 SL2 Sedan

I'd bet it is from the triple body seam leaking. At upper corners of trunk lid. Under the (removable) plastic body panels. I have a 1997 SL which I fixed, same problem. And also fixed brother in...
