Re: Life span of water pump.......?

Can guarantee new part will not last as long as the OE one... . Having said that, got 240,000 from original one, and now another 100,000 on the NAPA replacement.

Like to get Delco/GM replacements...

Re: Oil drain plug gasket

Fumoto drain valves are around $25, if I remember correctly. They insert like a regular drain plug, but have a spring loaded lever which turns a ball valve. Have installed on multiple vehicles...

Re: S-Series Mileage Milestones 100k 150k 200k 250k and beyond

THIRD OF A MILLION MILES! It took 17 years, but finally reached the big third of million mile milestone last week. Like many of you folks, it's amazing what I haven't had to replace/repair after all...

Re: Oil drain plug gasket

That's the beauty of installing a Fumoto valve - haven't needed a new drainplug gasket for over 300,000 miles.

Re: No Code High Idle (and EGR question)

Appreciate confirmation on EGR function. The first time it came off it was caked up with carbon and didn't move much (and subsequently replaced).

AZ swapped old parts for new - is it just me or...

No Code High Idle (and EGR question)

Trying to chase down a recent high idle issue on '02 SL, started by looking at all the usual culprits, namely IAC and TPS (replaced 11/18). Not to my surprise, they both looked surprisingly...

Re: Aftermarket radios?

Installed a decent, hand me down Alpine head unit in my '02 Saturn, ended up using existing wiring and speakers without any issues. I will say that the USB charging port in radio seems to charge...

Re: Smooth SL

Not sure if photos do the end result justice, but here you go. The real difference is the feel of the panel compared to what I started with. Missed a small section where hood creases form and the...

Part Number/Bolt Size

Diagnosed overhearing issue (with Richpin's great video tutorial) and ended up having to replace original cooling fan motor ($28 at NAPA). Outside of hassle of getting fan shroud out, was another...

Smooth SL

If you have a vehicle that hasn't been produced for 17 years (or on this website), you probably enjoy/tolerate vehicle maintenance... . Have always enjoyed how easy it is to work on my SL and...

Re: Nifty Shifty

This latest repair highlighted what a little effort can do to make a nearly undriveable Saturn into running shape. Thought I had some major tranny linkage issue, was on verge of parking it. $8 in...

Re: Nifty Shifty

Contacted lubricant maker CRC to see what shifter cable lube recommendations they had... . Primary suggestion was silicone spray, not the dry lube with Teflon I actually used. Silicone flows well,...

Re: How to tell that you own a Saturn S

You can pull your key out of the ignition switch with zero effort.

The passenger side of your front chassis is rust free.

Your Saturn laughs at shopping carts.

NO RUST! (at least visible...

Re: Nifty Shifty

I lubed anything and everything that moved... . I tried to squirt into the ends of the cables (with limited success), on and around the shifter ball, and all parts of the linkage. Was very...

Nifty Shifty

Experiencing a case of shifter arthritis in my '02 SL 5spd. Reading previous posts has lead me to do the normal stuff - examine cables (good), clean (done) and lube with a "dry" spray with teflon....

Re: Dirty Girl

About the same for me. Car will start to exhibit a high idle, usually around 1500rpm, but if you turn it off and restart, will idle normally. Clean the TB, replace the IAC and TPS (thanks lifetime...

Re: Name that Part!

Much thanks!

Quick scan of the usual parts guys (NAPA, RockAuto, Oscaro) doesn't show a replacement unit, so refurbishment may be only solution.

Was thinking dab of RTV would seal it enough...

Name that Part!

So, what do we call that black plastic thing with two hoses that sits on top of the throttle body?

And for extra credit, can anyone tell me what size o-rings it uses to seal against the top of...

Dirty Girl

Realize our 1.9L (SOHC) cars generate their fair share of intake gunk, but was wondering if there are any common factors leading to excessive build up... .

Used to cleaning the TB every year, and...

Re: Using synthetic oil for winter months

Failed to mention that I'm currently at 318,000 with no smoke and what I consider moderate oil consumption - about a quart every 2000. Better than my 2016 Subaru.

Re: Using synthetic oil for winter months

Run conventional over summer months, change to syn for winter to help with easier startups.

Will ONLY use Fram filters - even base (Extra Guard) are better than most other brands out there. And...

Re: Not Dead Yet

Original clutch, original rear brakes, head gasket, and all original engine internals. Pretty amazed with what hasn't failed over 17 years.

The only thing that's gone bad (that I wouldn't have...

Re: Not Dead Yet

With oil consumption of around 2000 mi +/- per quart, my '02 might be less thirsty than my new Subaru... . No doubt due to averaging 2400 mi between oil/filter changes.

Hate to think what the...

Not Dead Yet

When my clutch pedal dropped to the floor last week, figured my silver blue SL was on its last leg... . What bothered me was that the pedal seemed to have dropped overnight, wouldn't think a clutch...

Re: What would the S-Series look like if GM would'nt have stopped making them?

The simple answer is it would look like an Ion first and later an Aura, since that's exactly what GM choose to do... . If they did try to stay true to the SL's roots, then you'd probably see the same...
