Re: RWD conversion

I second the mid-engine idea. Take the Saturn engine and trans and put it behind the driver's seat so it will drive the rear wheels.

Then you can top the oil off while driving on the highway.

Re: Detonation due to Carbon Buildup

I suppose I forgot to clarify -- this particular DOHC has the SOHC transmission with 2 overdrive gears. The real magic happens when you reach highway speeds

Thanks chaos, I'll look into the fuel...

Re: Detonation due to Carbon Buildup

Very good points -- thank you for the replies!

@ fetchitfido:
I ran almost a full tank of 89 octane a few weeks ago - did not notice a difference, however it was only one tank. Typically I run...

Detonation due to Carbon Buildup

My 1999 SL2 tends to get a lot of carbon buildup inside everything. as a result, I'm always overdue for a throttle body cleaning and the EGR valve throws a fit every few months.

But I've got a...

Clutch Pedal Bushing

Hey guys, I need a bit of advice on where to buy a part or otherwise fix a minor issue.

My 1999 SL2 has developed a clutch pedal noise over the past few months. The pedal clicks loudly when you...

Re: What did you do to your S-Series today...

I did an impromptu alignment with nothing but an adjustable wrench, to fix the toe on my right front wheel.

I Recently replaced the steering knuckle, and the old one must have been bent because...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

Well, I've got a small update!

I had my tires balanced for free through a stroke of good negotiations. In the process, they discovered my RR tire was full of fix-a-flat and would not balance...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

As for the main thread topic, I did some diagnostic work today before getting caught in a rain storm. I picked up each corner of the car and felt the bearing wobble and resistance.

Both rear tires...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

My '99 SL2 has rear drums and no ABS. I don't know what determines whether or not a car had rear discs or drums.

I've heard that you just need to put the donor calipers, rotors, and pads on in...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

Saturn Night, thanks for the analysis and advice.
I did exactly what you suggested and found a good donor bearing on a 1999 SC2 in my local junkyard. The noise still continues, so I will check out...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

Hey all, sorry to bump, but I figured I should post an after-install update for anyone else following this issue now or in the future.

I went to my friend's house with the good junkyard knuckle...

Re: What did you do to your S-Series today...

A mismatched tire on the rear is not a big deal. But, a mismatched tire size on the front is a bad idea.
The front diff is built to accept temporary speed differences between the left and right...

Re: Sloppy 5 Speed shifter

Hi, I have done a lot of investigation into the slop in my SL2 and I've found that it all seems to come from the shift mechanism on the transmission itself.

There is very little to no play at any...

Thanks, good to know. I may put a thin coat on the splines just to put in the CV shaft easily. Will do it tomorrow

Re: Found a JY 1998 SC2 "Red Hot" -- What parts should I pull?

Yeah, plus I really don't want to deal with pulling and installing a cluster again haha. I think I will sell the gauges.

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

I drove to the junkyard around noon and did some tests -- it does not seem to be affected even by hard braking.
I pulled a knuckle with hub and bearing included from a 1999 sc2 for $30. Spins good...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

Okay, I think I'll go drive and try to see if hard-ish braking will make the noise go away.

If not, I might just pull that junkyard knuckle -- I want to fix this sooner than later and the part's...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

Sorry for double post but I just had a thought:

If this noise is a warped rotor touching a pad at its high spot -- wouldn't the noise go away if you applied enough brakes to make the pads stay on...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

That makes sense to me. Thank you for the explanation.

I guess I probably can't fix the problem without replacing the rotor.
I might go to the junkyard anyways and pick up a cheap temporary donor...

Re: Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

I'll look at that today. Definitely seems like it would be easier to replace a rotor than to replace the knuckle.

I had the caliper off when I rerouted the brake hoses, but I suppose I should have...

Re: Saturn and Air Pollution

If you've got a working cat and nothing throwing an SES light -- you're probably doing pretty damn well compared to many other cars on the road.

That 1.9 isn't too big and the biggest thing we...

Dizzy Unusual wheel bearing noise -- hard to diagnose

I've got a 1999 SL2 w/o ABS. 182,000 miles.

I bought the car about 2 months ago, and under my ownership it's always had a strange noise coming from the right front wheel area.

It is a "woh woh...

Re: Found a JY 1998 SC2 "Red Hot" -- What parts should I pull?

I would have replied sooner but the site was down for me all day until now!

Went and saw the car today -- I pulled all four black emblems and the white cluster.
Car was in iffy cosmetic shape...

Found a JY 1998 SC2 "Red Hot" -- What parts should I pull?

My local junkyard has one of these special 1998 "Red Hot" coupes!
After some research, it appears only ~650 were made....
Anyways, I want to pull some rare parts tomorrow, before it gets crushed. I...

Re: Is this a timing chain noise?

That is good to hear -- a bit of lifter chatter shouldn't be a big deal for the time being.

I changed the oil on this car for the first time in my ownership a few weeks ago -- and I totally didn't...
