When I did mine, I used a bunch of wooden blocks stacked up. A small floor jack might also work.
I put in five gallons of gas and fired it up.

There is no PCV valve. There is an orifice in the head that mates to the intake manifold. if the orifice is plugged, tthis could cause your problem.
Only way to clean it is remove the intake...

I'm not sure about a 2008, but on my 2003 there is a major body electrical connector on the drivers side floor kick panel that is know for bad connections.
The main engine wiring harness plugs...

If your a DIYer, The next time you put new brake pads on, I'd change the hoses, consider doing the rear hoses and shoes.
When I did mine I also replaced the front calipers and rear brake...

Look for the rust anyway, just in case it came down from the rust belt.
Brake hoses are a common failure with Vue, The symptoms will be dragging brake or a brake that won't release. Not a lot...

On the Vue, the front engine cradle attach points rust from the inside out. So if you see rust on the outside, unfortunately, your done. Take a screwdriver and poke around. Be prepared to panic...

Look very carefully at the control arms where they attach to the frame, these have a habit of rusting out.
Also look at the control arm links. To do an alignment there are cam bolts on these...

Turn the key to run for about 2 seconds, then turn it off. Do this two or three times and see if it starts up.

Before doing anything, also look carefully at the cradle. mine was rusted out, it did the symptoms as you described. I found a good rust free cradle in a Texas junkyard.
As for the front cradle...
