Saturn TDI

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=193909&page=17

Haven't been here in awhile, but thought I would post an update. The Saturn TDI is still alive and well...and knocked down 72.77 mpg on...

Re: Saturn TDI

Just a quick update; I filled up today and got 57.4 mpg out of it, so I am really pleased with that! I think with a little more work I can top 58 mpg easy enough...

Re: Saturn TDI

Yep, I'm using the TDI trans...it's geared a lot taller for use behind a turbodiesel - 2200 rpm @ 65 mph to give you an idea of just how much taller. The Saturn 195-60-15 tire size is also taller...

Re: Saturn TDI

That's how it worked out in the end; the Saturn clutch master cylinder has a smaller bore than the TDI slave, so it couldn't displace enough fluid to fully disengage the clutch. A pre-bled system...

Saturn TDI

Thought I would update this project, so here it is:

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=193909

This has been my daily driver for awhile; I'm currently getting 54-55 mpg out of it. I...

Re: Saturn TDI

I checked the fuel mileage for the first time last week; it got almost 45 mpg, and most of that was running around town and on the back roads, with about sixty miles of it on the highway. Since then...

Re: Saturn TDI

Actually, diesels are intentionally geared tall because of all the low-rpm torque they generate and their low redline (about 4000 rpm or so with this one).

I took it to work the other day; on the...

Re: Saturn TDI

I've got about 100 miles on it...aside from the battery not being quite up to the task of starting a diesel in single-digit weather (I'm using the one out of my VW Bug for now), it hasn't posed any...

Re: Saturn TDI

After 2+ years of plugging away at this conversion, it is finally on the road! I've only driven it 20 or so miles, but wow, it really pulls! Still some sorting out to do (the main reason why I did...

Re: Poly trailing arm bushings

I did the master kit in my '95 SW2 a few years back as part of my suspension rebuild, and that was about 107,000+ miles ago. No problems with squeaks or anything, really improved the handling and...

Re: GM Hopes to Retain Saturn Customers, but 69% of SaturnFans.com Members Surveyed S

Funny thing, in my Personal Finance class this semester, one of our assignments is to pick out a vehicle (2005 or newer) and research what it would cost to purchase, insure, maintain, and even look...

Re: Saturn TDI

I probably won't try for a timeslip (lost some of my dexterity and reaction to a stroke a few years back), but I may put it on a chassis dyno at some point to see what it puts out for hp and torque...

Re: Saturn TDI

I have a lot to look forward to! I can tell you that 155 lbs of torque right off idle is really nice!

Re: Saturn TDI

It's amazing how hard it pulls right off the line...it's rated at 90hp, but makes something like 155+ lbs of torque from 1800-2200 rpm. I might produce a bit more since I'm running a front-mounted...

Re: Custom suspension pics...

Well, here it is, four years and 97K later since I did this swap, and it's still going strong! I'll have to post an updated pic, as the previous server that hosted the old ones is long gone.

Re: Strut Life?

Mine went about 235K; I replaced them with the KYB/H&R combination and machined new strut mounts, been really happy with the firmer ride and improved handling.

Re: SC1-new engine cradle install

If I remember right, those are spot-welded to a sheetmetal plate and clipped into place. You can take a peek at the rears through the bulkhead mount to see what they look like. Not sure if these...

Re: Shifter Broke Today

Not sure of your fabrication skills or tool collection, but it might be possible to just thread the end of the cable and replace it with a heim joint. This would mean removing the shifter to remove...

Re: Stumble/Misfire issue...

Well, I checked and cleaned all the coil pack terminals and grounds, although they looked pretty good to begin with. Also cleaned the EGR in good shape. It still stumbles in the same off idle/2500...

Re: Stumble/Misfire issue...

Yep, all the dash lights work when I first turn the key, and go out like they are supposed to once the car fires up. I'll take a crack at cleaning the EGR and the electrical terminals/grounds on the...

Re: LSD w/ mp2 trans

When I had my SW2 trans rebuilt some years ago at 175K (output shaft bearing was starting to rumble), they found that the diff pin was starting to go. I went with the Phantom Grip setup with the...

Re: Wind Powered Saturn on the Way

Reminds me of a political cartoon from the mid-'70s during the Energy Crisis; it showed a huge Cadillac outfitted with the sails and rigging from a clipper ship, and the owner hanging out the drivers...
