I would start by R&R the VSS its a cheap part that can easily fail and you have VSS codes.

p.s a faulty VSS would cause your spedo not to work.

I hope all ends well, sounds like Old Nuc came to the rescue so your in good hands. I don't know the reasons behind doing the valve seals just because you were in there but who am I to judge or point...

How did you go about checking them? Have you swapped them with known good coil packs? You have the correct fire order right? Top of engine from left to right 1-2-3-4, 4-1-2-3 on coil.

How can you tell for sure where the sound comes from when your accelerating? Shouldn't you be in the car with the hood down while driving.

It is not unheard of for rear drums and shoes to have over 600k miles on them and still be original's. My truck has 300k with the original rear drums and shoes, just inspect, clean, lube and adjust...
