Re: Bye bye little Satty

Sadly, because our local track closed down, I'm forced to move to dirt track racing which involves a lot of 'rubbing.' The plastic panels are tough to find each week :-)

Dazed Bye bye little Satty

My racecar #5 (1998 Saturn SC2) is no more. One too many walls: bent the sub frame and the main frame. Couldn't turn left and for a race car that's fatal.

I have learned a lot about car mechanics...

Happy Re: New Starter... nothing starts

Turns out the engine has 'seized'. Not a traditional way either: I hit a wall and it bent the subframe. I thought it was just the subframe but it's also the frame; it is now bent into the pulleys of...

Re: New Starter... nothing starts

Yes I've bench tested it with 3 voltages. It's a new starter.

New Starter... nothing starts

Just installed a new starter in 1998 SC2. Turn the key and nothing happens, no turning, no clicking, no buzzing. Nothing. The starter worked before I put it in.

I've checked the fusable link and...

Re: Any experience with EBC brake products?

I race my saturn and have used both EBC Reds and Hawk Yellows. Personally found they were great, lasted long time and had no fade at all.

Re: 1999 sc2 oil leak getting worse

Not an oil leak: it's torque sweat. :-)

Re: Cornering capabilities

Lost the rear end twice on my 98 SC2 (racing on asphalt oval).

The biggest problem I have is it pushes like mad. It's a very fine line between turning and pushing and the tire temperatures really...

Re: omg oil everywhere

Engine oil is like baby poo... a small amount can get everywhere.

Valve cover gasket. Simple job... great youtube videos out there will step you through it.

Re: Any way to verify a head gasket failure?

My reaction is it's the water pump not the head gasket.

Happy Re: 95 SL2 tensioner removal

Disconnected top mount and lift the engine up an inch. Wooden block under oil pan to lift the engine with the jack.

It's a PITA but it can be done aka "if I can do it, absolutely everyone else in...

Re: '93 SC2 running too hot (here we go again!)

"make sure the bypass line from the head to the coolant reservoir is not clogged"

When the engine is very hot check the hoses: is the bottom one significantly cooler than the top one? If it is,...

Re: What have I done NOW?

Aha! Thanks for the picture.

I think I put the large connectors in 90 degrees rotated and are touching the post of the purple wire. When I get home I'll have a look.

What have I done NOW?

Replaced the starter on my 98SC2.

Connected the battery and the car tried to start up.

0. Disconnected battery
1. Disconnected starter electrical. (Big connectors)

Went to upull and found nice ones.

Disconnect hose, slide retainer on. Make sure it's on the right way round because it kind of connects and makes it hard to remove to do it...

Re: New struts, Now I need alignment Elongate bolt holes or buy camber bolts?

Elongation is the suggested process for altering the camber. I used cam bolts and constantly had to readjust (never could get them tight enough).

Re: Front suspension and Drivers CV replacement

You may want to consider leaving the AC Condenser on the engine. It gives you a couple of extra pounds on the RF which can improve turn in.

At my track that helped on corner 1 but killed me on the...

Re: Front suspension and Drivers CV replacement

Nope: routing is different and you need an A/C Delete belt. It's a good idea to delete the AC for power gain, weight loss and easier access to the Water Pump which will likely fail soon :-) Did on my...

Re: Jette Racing update

Great cars to race with. 98 SC2. Light weight, excellent rear suspension. Just wished it was a stick but have won a number of heats and features.

Blown Head Gasket

I'm thinking of buying a car with a blown headgasket.

Is there a way to determine if the piston has warped or something equally difficult?

Re: Radiator leak at transmission fitting

Don't try Radiator Stop leak: it's rarely works and screws everything else up.

I tried the JB Weld fix and couldn't get it to make a good enough weld.

Ended up picking up a fairly new radiator...

Re: Just bought a saturn

Keep an eye on your oil level: ideally at every gas fill up. Too many of these great cars die because of the oil level dropping too low.

I compiled a list of common answers and specs here: ...
