If I may ask, for confirmation, the wheel bearings for the front assemblies, are those bearings roller ball bearings or needle bearings (like one would see in a u-joint) ??

Nope.....relative your cooling fan activation, your engine is functioning perfectly. There are no issues here; either when your fan activates, or the swing of the gauge, when you activate the A/C.

Yes, they've been failing for awhile

which has lodged onto the base of the pintle -- thus allowing for a small leak.

Ten fill ups average figure much more accurate

And I've used a spreadsheet, started when I purchased to car in Dec of 1994. I use a 10x, 20x, 30x, & 40x fill-up averages.

Current figures:

Last 10 fill ups > 40.56 mpg
Last 20 fill ups >...
